The combination of HBO and HBO Max led a fragmented field, one that saw the overall noms lead grow dramatically after last year’s neck-and-neck finish.
Last year was a tumultuous awards season for Netflix. After losing the morning crown of Emmy nominations by a single time, the streaming service went on to grab the most trophies when the season wrapped up in September. If Netflix wants to repeat, the battle will be even more uphill this time around. Thwarting them is perennial rival HBO, who garnered 140 nominations for HBO and HBO Max on Tuesday morning.
HBO hasn’t hit the “second and third place combined” numbers, but stands as the clear all-time leader after the nomination dust has subsided. Putting the numbers together for Hulu, Disney +, Fox, FX and ABC makes for a solid morning for the Disney TV family. Backed by a surprising showing of the limited series “Dopesick”, Hulu finished in third place overall with 58. Disney + ‘s 34 total nominations are a bit of a regression, not having the twin power of “WandaVision” and “The Mandalorian”, who explained 47 all by themselves last year.
The rest of the stream is the usual mixed bag. “Severance” and “Ted Lasso” raised the Apple TV + numbers to 50, continuing the platform’s upward trajectory. With the help of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Prime Video has had a slight resurgence, bouncing back to its total of 30 in 2020 after getting just half of that total last year. Paramount + made incremental gains, coming in double digits, while Peacock’s 3 unique nominations came for “Angelyne”.
Traditionally one of the best broadcast networks thanks to the bounty of “Saturday Night Live,” 2022 saw NBC return to the pack, with CBS and ABC both having better screenings. CBS matched NBC’s total thanks to its live programming (five names each for an Adele special and the Grammys, among others).
