In most video games, there is a pretty universal goal to defeat enemies. You are a superhero going out to save the world from whatever enemy is in your way! Victory is just a jump, a slash, or a strike away and it’s up to you.
However, not all villains are inherently evil and want to hurt you. Some started out friendly, some became friendly, and some were friendly all the time! So let’s look at those once-friendly enemies.

10 Darth Revan – Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
There is no one in fiction as evil as a Sith Lord and Darth Revan is no exception. After leaving the Jedi to join the Mandalorian Wars, Revan and his apprentice Darth Malak invade the Republic only for Malak to turn on Revan and his ship explodes in space. Even with Darth Malak as the main villain of Knights of the Old Republic, Revan’s presence can be felt throughout the story.

9 Mr. L – Super Paper Mario
The mysterious Mr. L, also known as The Green Thunder, from Super Paper Mario is one of the best characters in the game. A fierce fighter, he built a robot modeled after himself, and no one knows his true identity.
Okay, that’s not true. It’s clear Luigi. He was in danger of being evil to Nastasia and didn’t revert back to being Luigi until he was destroyed by Dimentio. Pokemon Legends: Arceus changed everything we knew about catching Pokemon. Instead of wandering into a patch of grass and having Pokémon fight each other, now these monsters roam free and can attack you directly. This makes every single Pokemon that much more intimidating. Well, all Pokemon except for Aipom.
Instead of attacking the player, Aipom will just run up and stand straight ahead with that big grin on his face. Even if you try to catch it, Aipom will not attack you. He’s just a funny little monkey. While most Pokemon might attack you and others might run away, Aipom is a welcoming and positive sign.
7 Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze) – Batman Arkham City/Knight

While most bad guys might be after money, power, or just pure chaos, Victor Fries just wants to find a cure for his terminally ill wife, Nora, who is being kept frozen in a cryogenic chamber . Sure, his methods may be questionable, but the motivation behind them is pure.
In Arkham City and Arkham Knight, Fries battles the dark knight, but also helps him. He only attacks Batman when The Joker kidnaps Nora and feels he has no choice. It gets even more heartbreaking in Arkham Knight when Nora is released from her frozen state and the two of them decide to ride off into the sunset dying together.
6 The Fixer – Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart
The Fixer from Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is a giant robot that only wants to fix broken things. However, after defending his planet from marines, he is overwhelmed by the destruction and declares that nothing can be fixed. Instead, he tries to destroy everything broken to basically put them out of their misery.
Although The Fixer is destructive, all he wants to do is help broken things. Eventually, Clank is able to tell The Fixer that he is valuable, even if he can’t be fixed because something is broken. The Fixer sees that all is not lost and returns to his fixing ways, hoping to do his best.
5 White Mushroom – Kingdom Hearts
The heartless from Kingdom Hearts are terrifying shadowy creatures that seek to steal people’s hearts. Although this concept is scary, many of them are quite cute and friendly. And the White Mushroom is the kindest of them all.
The White Mushroom does not attack Sora and her friends. Instead, he just wants to play a game of charades. It will act something out and all you have to do is cast the spell associated with it. Do this enough times and you will be rewarded with some rare items. The White Mushroom seems to be just a fun guy!
4 Wheatley – Portal 2
GLaDOS is one of the biggest villains in all of video games. She is smart, menacing, deadly, and she really hates you. This is all the opposite of Wheatley, another heart at Aperture who was programmed to fill GLaDOS with terrible thoughts. That’s why it’s such a surprise when he becomes the main antagonist for Portal 2.
First, Wheatley wants to stop GLaDOS’s reign of terror and help you escape. He can mess up a lot of the time, but his heart is in the right place. However, he is corrupted by the amount of power and wants to run tests on you just like his predecessor. But at the end after being sent to the vacuum of space, he just wants to apologize. Wheatley may be a computer core, but overall it’s a good egg.
3 Axel – Kingdom Hearts 2
Kingdom Hearts 2 left players with a lot of questions, especially if they hadn’t played Chain of Memories. Where were Sora, Donald, and Goofy? Who is Roxas? And why does Axel keep attacking him? Well, to answer the last question, people just needed to play the game.
Roxas and Axel are anyone and members of Organization XIII. When Roxas disappeared and his memory was replaced with a new one, his best friend Axel just wanted him back because they were best friends. He believed that the best way to do this was to battle him and eventually defeat him. Although this seems like a questionable tactic, it turns out that it worked in the long run when Axel and Roxas eventually find their own.
2 Waddle Dee – Kirby
It seems that all popular gaming series have common iconic enemies. Mario has Goombas, Dragon Quest has Slimes, and Kirby has Waddle Dees. And Waddle Dees have to be the sweetest and cutest enemies ever created.
Planet Popstar’s native species, Waddle Dee is just kind of there. They wander around carelessly and when they actually attack Kirby, he stumbles into him. Furthermore, they spend as much time helping Kirby as hurting him. Watch Kirby And The Forgotten Land! Despite their loyalty to King Dedede, Waddle Dees are just creatures of wonder going about their lives.
1 Cerberus – Hades
While I’m sure every dog you fight in a video game is a good boy or girl, the best boy of all is Cerberus from Hades. He sleeps next to Hades and you can go up and pet him if you want. Zagreus grew up with him, so Cerberus will not attack you. That’s why it’s so surprising to see him at the exit to Hades when you get there.
But even then, Cerberus refuses to attack you. Instead, all you have to do is find his favorite snack to move him around. Cerberus may not be an enemy in the traditional sense, but it is a creature that blocks your path and it is only because of his love that Cerberus keeps you alive. And you may not kill the kindest thing of all.
