One of my favorite hobbies is playing video games with my boyfriend.
But lately, the most popular games seem to be very masculine and take away the fun of the game. Even the existing feminine games aren’t that fun because the game companies try so hard to make them “girly”. So I tried to find fun and inclusive games for women in good taste.
According to DataProt’s Gamer Demographics, 46% of American gamers are women.
However, games don’t fit this demographic because some of them don’t represent different genres. The main characters in these games are usually male and often stereotyped. Sometimes, though, the occasional match will have a strong female lead. Another problem is that women are often sexualized in games. An example of this for me is Lara Croft, the main character of the Tomb Raider video games.
So far, there are a few that I play and have fun with. They emphasize equality with sense and taste. But before we get into the details, there are a few factors that make a game fun.
The first factor is the graphics. If the game looks like it could be played in an arcade with quarters, then it probably has a simpler plot and mode than other more modern games, although it can be fun to go back to the old games every now and then. I still love to play pinball and pong.
The second factor is land development. Some games have no story and it gets a bit boring. Sure, it might be great at first, but then it just feels repetitive. An example of this would be ForzaHorizon – a racing game series that allows you to customize and buy cars.
The last factor is the personality of the game. It sounds silly, but it’s important because some games will have graphics and plot, but they don’t appeal to the individual. Everyone has different tastes when it comes to gaming.
So with that in mind, I’d recommend these games if you like inclusive games:
This was the first multiplayer game we played as a couple. We haven’t stopped playing since. The game series, which has a story from the first game, is great for sci-fi fans with space, aliens and galactic combat. The graphics get better with each game. It’s great to see the evolution of games since Halo has been around for almost 21 years. The game itself has options for everyone. If you like to go at your own pace and play through a story, it has a campaign mode where you can hunt aliens. If you like fighting and mayhem, it has online multiplayer where you can play with friends and fight people from all over the world. The downside to this game mode is that it has so many players that some people try way harder than they should. I often get overwhelmed. Now, how feminine is it? It is decent. The game is fun for anyone and players can customize their character to be more feminine or masculine. Since you’re fighting aliens, it doesn’t matter. Also, in story mode, there are some female commanders. It evens out nicely and it doesn’t seem like the game developers tried too hard to make the female characters too “girly” or too sexy. Note, however, that this game takes some getting used to and the level of difficulty is higher. I recommend playing the campaign before playing online with other people.
New Lego Starwars: The Skywalker Saga:
As a die-hard fan of Lego video games, this game was highly anticipated. If you are a Starwars fan, this game is great for you. It is very easy to play and follows all the movies in order. It’s primarily a story-driven game, but players can explore and earn cool stuff on the side. The graphics are insane to me (coming from a Lego game). The characters in the game react to your movements, which is weird. Lego games are known for making their games funny as well. There are little gags and easter eggs throughout the game. Some of them are pretty silly, but it makes the experience a little more fun. Now I know this sounds like a “kids” game but it’s a lot of fun for everyone. The difficulty varies with each level, but anyone can play and beat it. This means that it is quite a game for both men and women.
At first I was uncomfortable with this game as it is quite graphic. This is not a child’s play. However, the story is amazing and well thought out. This game is not multiplayer, which is a bummer. The pace is slow and the difficulty isn’t too crazy. The graphics, although terrible, are very detailed. If you like zombie apocalypse/post-apocalypse themes, this is a great game. The main character in these games, Ellie, is a strong female protagonist. She is what many would consider a normal girl. The developers of the game did not try hard to make it look like a girl. Again it wasn’t too “girly”. During the game he also creates many relationships with people from different walks of life. The game has its own personality and a very unique plot. The downside of this game is that it is very slow. For most people, however, the plot makes up for it.
For those of you who have seen the movie “Need for Speed”, this game will be very familiar. You race and customize the cars to your liking. The best part is trying to escape from the police who will appear randomly while you are racing. But, here’s the catch, while you’re behind you still have to finish the race. The graphics are really nice and the game allows you to take “photos” of your car in the game. It’s hard to play at first, but you get used to it. Characters can be customized and you can even change your voice. This game is for anyone who loves cars or Need for Speed or both. Unlike ForzaHorizon, this game never gets boring. Oh, and the more cars you unlock the more races you do. Vehicles vary by year, make, model and class. The downside of this game is that it takes a while to get to the top spot. But it keeps you on your toes and the competition is fierce. It’s even more intense when you play online with friends.
This was the last game I played. It’s single player and…weird. The player plays as the main character, Alex Chen, who has a “superpower” that shows how people feel. Later in the game, it helps calm people down. When playing, you are given several options that will affect the outcome of the game. There are hundreds of combinations that land you in different endings. The game is mystical and fun. The graphics are pretty decent. And the main character is a more modern representation of a woman in her 20s. The game also raises awareness of depression and anxiety disorders. It also delves into grief and how to deal with it. It’s a very slow game, but again the plot makes up for it.
