Sometimes, all you need to do to make a story more interesting is to add worship to the mix. There is an undeniable attraction to them: you wonder the motives of the cultists, what kind of things the leaders hide, and whether the religious beliefs hold or not. Cults ask questions, and in many video games, the answer is violence.
Thanks to this fascinating style, we have seen trends emerge from video games many times over the decades. Sometimes they are main targets, sometimes they are central opposites, and sometimes they can be providers of information or entertainment.
8 Happy Happyism – Earthbound
Encountered early on in Earthbound, the encounter with the cult of Happy Joy is one of the first moments of the game that comes off as ‘weird’. It’s a cult of sorts headed by a man named Carpainter, a man obsessed with painting the world blue. The floor is blue, the cows are blue, even the cultists are dressed head-to-toe in blue robes which is unfortunate. Hey, at least it’s not clear, right?
While this will be, well, harmless, you’re forced to take down the Carpainter when he kidnaps Paula, possibly at the hands of Porky, your frequent rival and someone you bad. To see also : Sega wants to adapt more video games after the success of the Sonic movie.
7 The Children Of Atom – Fallout 3
If there’s one thing you know is powerful in an apocalyptic, non-radioactive landscape, it’s radiation. The Atomic Children’s Church finds its roots in Megaton, a settlement built around an unexploded atomic bomb. They worshiped the bomb and built the settlement, drawing many people from far away and establishing the church as an important part of the United States after the war.
The Children of the Atom worship the molecule as a form of divinity, believing that each atom contains the entire universe and that death through nuclear destruction is a way to become one of the many universes within. 6 Robot Cult – Nier: Automata
One of Nier: Automata’s funnest moments is encountering a group of religious robots towards the end of the game. On the same subject : MLBPA’s Tony Clark is concerned that MLB is entering the ‘dangerous world’ of sports gambling partnerships. You return to the Abandoned Factory and start the game, encountering a whole group of robots who, disconnected from their network, have found (given) religion, with ‘His Grace’ on their heads.
His Grace is quickly revealed to be an empty, broken robot. His congregation revels in the revelation, celebrating his ascension to godhood, and flocks to you in euphoria—believing that their death will allow them to join their worship leader. You can’t help but feel uneasy about this series.
5 Los Iluminados – Resident Evil 4
Ruled by Osmund Saddler at this time, Los Iluminados was actually a centuries-old cult of the resident nature, who worshiped the Plagas. Plagas are parasites that take over the host’s body, turning them into, you guessed it, zombie antagonists to mutilate.
Saddler reformed Los Iluminados by implanting his followers with these parasites and giving himself the power to control them with a plastic alter ego. Although daily life is similar to that of a normal ghost system, beneath the facade lies a hellish order to terrorize the living.
4 Team Plasma – Pokemon Black & White
Pokemon isn’t the first place you’d think to look for a cultist movement, but there’s no denying that Team Plasma looks like a cult. You have Ghetsis as the scheming leader, who uses a charismatic, slangy N language to recruit followers. There are seven sages, nobles, who are aware of the running of the sciences, and the ranks and ranks that do the dirty work.
With all the usual traditional trappings established, Team Plasma went to work encouraging the people of Unova to give up ‘owning’ Pokemon, releasing them into the wild. This was presented as a moral act but in reality it served to leave the public defenseless to Ghetsis’s true plan – to rule Unova with an iron fist and no one would oppose it.
3 The Cult Of Anu-Anu – Discworld Noir
Discworld Noir is a classic game with a cult following. Anu-anu is one of the minor gods of the Discworld, rarely worshiped except in the desert city of Al-Khali and the dark forests of the Uberwald. He is a wolf god who works with some of his followers based in Ankh-Morpork to commit ritual murders to summon a terrifying entity from the Dungeon Dimensions.
Discworld Noir is a point-and-click game centered on solving the mystery of these murderous cults and then, as you learn more about the cult, stopping their machinations. Despite the sad subject matter, you can expect roaring laughs and heartwarming moments if you pick up this classic.
Responsible not only for the murder of Uriel Septim VII, but the entire Oblivion Crisis, the Order of the Mythic Dawn is a cult that worships Mehrunes Dagon, the Daedric Prince of destruction and ambition. You’ll meet them several times during the game, with one notable instance being witnessing one of their encounters.
The influence of the cult can be felt throughout Cyrodiil. When you reach a certain point in the main story, many NPCs who were former friends will rush into your eyes, calling their special weapons and armor to kill you, which will destroy all their plans.
1 Your Cult – Cult Of The Lamb
Cultures often serve as opposing forces or sometimes focus on the pursuit of interesting aspects. It’s easy to see why – the cult lifestyle doesn’t really make that much sense, and prophets and leaders and murderers make wonderful villains. But some games allow you, dear reader, to be a villain.
Lamb tradition puts you in the shoes (hooves?) of the lamb. It is your responsibility to build scholars worthy of your divinity, the One who waits, and take revenge on the heretics who imprisoned them, and take away their power. The game allows you to develop a reliable ritual, from putting on great ceremonies to sacrificing followers of your god. If you enjoy these kinds of themed games, you really can’t pass it up.
