Review aggregate site OpenCritic keeps a list of all the year’s highest-rated new game releases. We’ve trimmed it down to remove remasters, remakes, DLC, and improved ports from existing games, focusing entirely on the new 2022 releases.

To no one’s surprise, Elden Ring FromSoftware currently holds the top spot with an impressive 95 rating. Elden Ring gained near-universal acclaim when it first launched earlier this year, with the game not only as one of the highest-rated games of 2022, but also one of the highest-rated games made to date. NORCO’s point-and-click adventure game has 90, as does Neon White, a unique first-person shooter game where players must use cards to perform special actions.
The 80s had some famous games, including some of the biggest new game releases of the year. The PlayStation exclusive Horizon Forbidden West has a rating of 88, as does the Nintendo Switch exclusive JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
