7 The Player Character – Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium is one of the best surprises in the RPG genre in recent years. Rather than acting as a standard RPG, the game is one of the most delightful and intriguing mystery games anyone can find.

Even something as small as the character’s name is considered a spoiler by some, and since the game is so new, it’s best to experience everything with little to no knowledge. It is important to know that you are tasked with solving the mystery of a person who appears to have been lynched.

6 Cole Phelps – LA Noire

6 Cole Phelps - LA Noire

Cole Phelps may not be the most amazing person, but he is one of the most compelling detectives in video games. He doesn’t take on a single mystery or case like most of the protagonists do, instead he takes on countless cases before the end of LA Noire.

All the different cases he takes on can also be very different as he travels through different police departments. He tackles some of the most notorious murders of his time, some of which are even based on real events.

5 Scott Shelby – Heavy Rain

Those who played Heavy Rain probably thought Scott Shelby was just a private investigator trying to do the right thing in the world. That’s how things seem at first glance, but as the game progresses the mystery is unraveled with some shocking revelations.

Shelby has some dark segments in an already strikingly dark game, but many of his segments will catch the eye of players interested in stopping the Origami Killer. One way or another, as long as you didn’t fail too many QTEs, you probably got what you wanted at some point.

4 Ronan O’Connor – Murdered: Soul Suspect

In most games, you play a hardy cop who will do whatever it takes to prevent more murders. The big twist on Soul Suspect is that you turn up dead on the spot and play the game as a ghostly detective.

Ronan manages to set himself apart from many of his fellow detectives by having additional powers that actually make sense. His adventure is unique, but feels familiar thanks to the simple and possibly weird investigation mechanics found within.

3 Francis York Morgan – Deadly Premonition

Though technically an FBI agent, Francis York Morgan spends the events of Deadly Premonition investigating a sinister murder in a sleepy town. The game’s structure is simple, but it stands out as one of the most unique horror experiences one can have.

Every aspect of the game is very clunky, making it a cult classic and also leaving Francis York Morgan as a kind of beloved character. Morgan can often feel like a walking cliché, something a lot of people love.

2 Pikachu – Detective Pikachu

If a talking Pikachu suddenly shows up and tells you it’s a detective, it’s probably best to just believe it. It’s hard to dispute how quickly people fell in love with Detective Pikachu as the game series quickly became a box office hit. It helps that Pikachu can be downright hilarious too.

The character is a unique take on a classic Pokemon, something that many fans have requested. While Pikachu isn’t what some people might have thought, the game’s adventure proves that the adorable creature is more than up to any task.

1 Paul Prospero – The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter

Those who haven’t experienced The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter should do so if you love a weird mystery. With Paul Prospero on the case, it doesn’t seem to take long for you to figure it all out.

The thing is, once you figure out what’s going on, you’ll start looking at the entire game in a new light. Prospero is considered a great character thanks to his surprising changes that can be seen throughout the game’s runtime, especially when it comes to the ending. It’s a dark story, but one that fans of the genre will be happy they tried.
