Electricity can be one of the wildest, most powerful elements in video games. It is guided by bolts, chains from enemy to enemy, and can even be summoned from the sky to deal massive damage. Those who have better control over it can direct it to physical feats, mess with electrical machines, and occasionally revive the dead through emergency defibrillation.
There are few masters of electricity in the games, but those around them are forces to be reckoned with. The strongest of them are powers and even gods, and if you mess with any of these guys you might end up as a smoking pair of shoes.
Even without power over electricity, the main antagonist of Metal Gear Solid 3 is both a boxing champion and a trained, albeit sadistic, soldier. But thanks to its ability to generate and control 10 million volts, it is much more dangerous than the average commander. His power allows him to have wild abilities such as being supernaturally strong and enduring. It allows him to punch a hole in Shagohod – something even an RPG-7 round couldn’t do – and survive a hit with the same type of RPG.
While he can shoot lightning, he also enjoys holding rifle cartridges between his fingers and firing them by boiling gunpowder and then using the shells as conductors for his powerful electric punches. It can also take electricity from other sources and use it to power machines. Oddly enough, it is not immune to its own electricity, and when it gets wet it can short circuit and hurt itself. 6 Ky Kiske (Guilty Gear)
Ky Kiske, a gifted swordsman and gifted mage, is a force to be reckoned with. The deuteragonist counterpart of Sol Badguy in the Guilty Gear series, Ky was a child prodigy even among the Holy Knights. And because he comes from such an honorable organization, you know when he handed your ass to you, it’s going to be a fair fight.
He is proficient in all forms of magic, but prefers lightning, the most difficult element to master. It pairs this with a legendary weapon known as the Seal of Thunder, which strengthens lightning spells – but only if you’re tough enough to deal with it. He can fire projectile electricity or apply it to his melee attacks, making him a flexible fighter that can keep opponents at bay or put pressure on them at close range. 5 The Sith (Star Wars)
Seriously, pick one. From Count Dooku to Starkiller, to Darth Revan to Emperor Palpatine, it seems the first thing Dark Side Force users learn is to throw electricity – and they’re all deadly to it. Probably because they skip all that inner peace crap and go straight to the fun part.
Maybe it’s because Force Lightning is almost purely offensive in use, although there are some niche examples of medical applications, such as when Darth Tyranus stabilized General Grievous’s heart. Either way, the Sith shouldn’t be underestimated as slashing with a cute red laser sword could be the best scenario if you anger them. If you are unlucky, you may instead be dragged into a smoking pile of ash.
4 Cole McGrath (Infamous)
Cole McGrath is the electrokinetic star of the first two Infamous games, who used her electrical powers to an excellent extent. His control of electricity manifests itself in a variety of ways, from empowering him in hand-to-hand combat with gigawatt blades to enabling him to fight at a distance with lightning and grenades. There are also more esoteric uses, such as draining health from enemies, reading minds in a corpse, and at least on one occasion, time travel.
His powers vary depending on whether he was good or bad. If he’s angry, his moves become decidedly lethal, striking groups with lightning that Emperor Palpatine would be proud of. As a good guy, his powers aren’t that deadly, but they do provide more flexibility in combat. 3 Thor (Marvel’s Avengers)
Norse wielder of Mjolnir and the all-encompassing Asgardian heartbreaker – does Thor really need an introduction at this point? Even among the Avengers, Odinson is a powerhouse, flying and throwing with divine power.
While he’s good at a slice and Mjolnir has nothing to mess with, Thor is ultimately a God of Thunder. This is evident in his God Blast, which catches enemies in a storm before being struck by lightning. A Warrior’s fury also imbues all his moves with lightning and makes allies invulnerable. For someone who controls electricity, it is quite energy efficient. A large amount of his abilities direct more energy to him, resulting in electric-empowered moves or shorter cooldowns. While devastating and energy-saving, Thor deserves the title of “Most Mighty Avenger.”
2 Zeus (Smite)
The Greek god of heaven and the king of Olympus, Zeus Smite, is not a god to be taken lightly. While he may seem like a frivolous hypocrite, flaunting his own domain of keeping oaths and honesty to commit infidelity in the form of a swan or a rain of gold, he still proves the power of heaven with impunity.
In his fury, he can cause the power of storms, and more precisely, lightning bolts. Zeus is more than the opponent of any god in any pantheon, hitting his enemies with increasingly intense projectiles, charging them with energy that he can detonate at will. He can lock an area with his ultimate, Thunderstorm, and anyone who chooses to stay in it will not only take impact damage but also take more charges to be detonated again.
1 Raiden (Mortal Kombat Series)
The thunder god and guardian of the Earth, Raiden is an eternal being and an elder god who places him several orders of magnitude above other combatants. The only thing that keeps him from destroying all threats to the Earth Kingdom is that as a god, he loses his divine powers when he enters other dimensions. Due to the rules of Mortal Kombat, he cannot meddle unless he becomes mortal.
But even as a mortal, he is a mortal adversary because millennia of his existence have given him the mastery of many martial arts. Even the fraction of his electrical powers he retains as a mortal is more than enough to deal with most enemies. He can teleport, summon lightning, shoot electric bolts and amplify his physical hits with electric fury. When she’s done with you, she can generate enough power to blow all your limbs away and go for good measure. Unfortunately, for all his power, he is not omniscient and is known to make stupid decisions. At least that makes it interesting.
