Buying multiplayer games used to be an easy decision for me: I would almost always get them on the Nintendo Switch because of how easy it is to play games both on a TV or in portable mode. Steam Deck has thrown a key in that decision-making process. The Handheld Gaming PC may be heavier, have poorer battery life, and may not come with a simple switch-like dock to throw my games on a larger screen, but because I feel like I can bank on Steam games that are much more long available the future, I have to make hard choices about whether to buy games on Valve Storefront instead of Nintendo.
There’s one important thing I said earlier: I did not have a gaming PC of any kind until I got the Steam Deck in April. For a long time, I’ve mainly been playing video games on Nintendo platforms, and I’re only really started playing the PlayStation and Xbox libraries with the onset of the pandemic. (I got a PS4 just to play Final Fantasy VII remake, and things escalated from there.)
While I have purchased many Steam games on sale or in Humble Bundles, I have only played a handful of them and only on old work laptops or my personal MacBook Airs. The Steam Deck, on the other hand, is a much more capable gaming device than any laptop I’ve ever had. When I set it up, I suddenly had access to almost 200 PC games I had previously bought or claimed, and I could play them on my couch or connect to an external display. I knew this would be the case when I made my reservation for the Steam Deck last year, but seeing the games on my own device was noticeable.
With Switch games, however, there is no guarantee that they will work with Nintendo’s next major console. Right now I just have to pinch my fingers that Nintendo decided to make this console backwards compatible with my Switch purchase. Personally, I do not count on it – Nintendo likes to find new ways to sell old games.
I would have liked to have brought the Mario Kart 8 from my Wii U to the switch, but in order to play it with my friends during the pandemic, I had to cancel the entire price for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Access to retro games is one of the primary benefits of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription, but all virtual console purchases I made years ago are not available on my Switch. And Nintendo is not afraid to close storefronts.
With Steam, on the other hand, I can be pretty confident that almost everything I buy that works now on Steam Deck will work just fine on any potentially upcoming Steam Deck or gaming-capable computer that I buy well into the future. (as long as the game supports whatever operating system I am, of course). I make a big assumption that Valve will not be bought or suddenly fall off the face of the earth – anything can happen in the video game industry, so maybe I should not try fate – but Valve seems to have a good thing going for him.
I should also say that on my Steam deck I have generally gravitated towards smaller and indie titles like Hotline Miami, Inside, and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. I suspect these are the types of games I personally would like to return to sometime in the future, and it’s going to be a lot easier to just download them to PC instead of grabbing my switch if it’s inevitably lost. Despite how much I love the Steam Deck and the potential that the Steam platform gives me easy access to games on the line for years and years, I have yet to fully commit to Valve’s ecosystem as it is a problem for Steam Deck Games on my site to play TV. Part of the magic of the switch is how effortlessly it switches from the handheld to the TV mode when you plug the device into its dock, and even if the Steam deck can connect to external displays, there is still no option that is that easy like the Switch experience.
I was looking at the official Steam Deck Dock to see if that could come soon, but since it’s late, I’ll have to wait. But even if I did not expect the Steam Deck to ever be as easy to play on a TV as a Switch, it might be worth a little inconvenience to play decades of PC games on the big screen at home and know that everything I buy now will likely work on other PCs on the line.
At the moment I still choose the switch for many games. (And of course, there are the big games like Zelda and Metroid that are only available on Switch.) But what used to be a no-brainer is now something about which I have a hard time thinking, and how Valve’s improved Steam Deck, Choices in the future may be even more difficult.
