Over the past school year, future computer coders and video game developers around the world have been able to find themselves in the eighth grade of the computer coding circle at Clark Avenue High School.
During a challenging school year for many students, eighth graders at Matthew LaBranche’s Coding Club in high school went a step further and learned coding in javaScript, with more students creating and coding their own video games.
One of the many impressive aspects of the club is the number of girls who participated. Of the seven students who successfully completed creating their own video games, six were girls.
LaBranche said this is a positive sign in an area and industry where men tend to predominate.
“Any future business will have something to do with computing and coding,” LaBranche said. “Coding is a very important topic for discussion and a very good skill to understand.”
Among the students who participated and created their own video games this year was Allison Romero, who was awarded Clark Avenue High School Student of the Year at a recent school board meeting.
In his video game Ducky AbDuckter, the player must collect rubber ducks while avoiding flying axes.
“It’s a huge amount of code that she had to learn from day one,” LaBranche said. And it’s not just about learning the code, he added, but if one line of code has an error, it goes back to the game board.
Of course, it could raise some suspicions if we saw an eighth-grader break through so many lines of code and create his own video game, but LaBranche said that’s not the case.
“(Allison’s) mom was a suspect and she thought I helped her with the code, it’s always a matter of how much the teacher did, and I didn’t want that,” he said. “But she did it all herself and that’s probably the biggest compliment you can get when someone suspects you’ve done all the code.”
Other students who have successfully created games over the past year have been Hillary Zambon and Catherine Ramos with Popping Bubble, Jasmine Martinez and Kyson Jose with Asteroid Destroyer, and Ariana Guerrrero and Latisha Rivera with Flying Kitty.
While students end up getting some pretty impressive games with more moving parts, sounds, and backgrounds, Martinez and other students say it all starts with learning and upgrading shapes and colors.
Martinez added that in addition to learning to create video games, coding helps in all classes because of the need for focus and dedication.
While students head to high school next year, LaBranche said he hopes to continue coding next year, perhaps with the help of some students who will return to help with the next group of eighth graders.
“I want to teach Python next year,” LaBranche said. “Python is the most popular program in the world, so young people should really learn if they think of it as a profession, they are guaranteed a job. It’s amazing how many opportunities there are. If you know this code really well, if you know it outwardly, you go to work right away.
