A 15-year-old boy is fighting for his life after bullets were fired at the apartment where he was playing video games with friends.
The shooting took place shortly before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Rev. Dr. Morrell Todd Homes in the Kingston area of Birmingham.
Lieutenant Rod Mauldin said South District agents responded to a report of a person on the ground. When they arrived, they learned that the teen had been rushed to the hospital in a private vehicle due to the nature of his injury.
The teenager was shot while lying in an apartment bedroom. Mauldin said he was shot in the upper body.
Several shots were fired. The shots also broke into a second apartment, but no one was injured.
“We have developed some solid clues in the case, but at this point the suspect is still at large,” he said. He said the city’s Real Time Crime Center has developed information that will be vital to the investigation.
Mauldin said investigators believe the residence was the target, but did not say who was believed to be the target. There were other teenagers in the apartment, but there were no adults at the time.
Since it was summer, there were a lot of kids outside playing, as they usually do, when the shooting happened.
“It’s alarming with so many kids in the area,” Mauldin said. “This is not the first incident we have in this area and we have increased patrols here.”
“We know there are people who come to this place who may not live here,” he said. “We need people to speak out and get involved in investigations when it comes to identifying trigger shooters.”
