WASHINGTON—United States Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) and chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), issued the following statement today welcoming Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Washington.

“I would like to welcome Prime Minister Kishida to the United States. I hope that, following the release of Japan’s groundbreaking National Security Strategy, his visit to the President will further strengthen the indispensable alliance between our two nations. In this new era of authoritarian aggression led by dictators like Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, America’s partnership with Japan is more important than ever. By working together on common interests in the region such as strengthening defense capabilities, energy production and trade, the United States and Japan have a real opportunity right now to ensure peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region for decades to come.”

In October, Senator Sullivan was in Japan to host a summit on the Alaska LNG project and to meet with senior Japanese officials. Sullivan issued a statement in support of Japan’s new national security strategy and related documents when they were released in December by Prime Minister Kishida.
