In Dan Manka’s January 3rd letter, he opposed the removal of Robert E. Lee’s artwork from West Point.
Their proof is that Lee was a prominent army officer who decided to defend his state instead of the United States of America.
However, Lee swore an oath: “I . . . do solemnly swear or affirm that I will bear real allegiance to the United States of America and will serve her honestly and faithfully against all her enemies or opponents . . .”
Lee and every other Southern officer who joined the confederacy violated that oath.
A person’s birth state has no merit when he raises his right hand and swears or affirms his allegiance to the United States of America.
Anyone who takes up arms and attacks the US is an enemy, regardless of what they have done before that act of war.
This applies to Lee in the 1860s, those who attacked the capital in 2021 and today in 2023.
I am a US citizen, not a Pennsylvanian. I took a similar oath as a member of the US Air Force and as a federal employee.
I believe I am bound by this oath until my death.
Today, my granddaughter will take that oath with pride as she begins her enlistment in the United States Air Force, and I hope she will honor it forever.
