Wordle has taken the world by storm. Whether it’s on the go or at your desk or on the john, everyone seems to be playing this tricky game of words and educated guesses. It is good for all existing norms. But where does that leave the crazy? Where can we show our power? How many games allow us to feel superior on social media because we got a perfect score? Samuel Stiles is the brain behind GuessTheGame, he started the site this year after being inspired by the popularity of Wordle. Every day, players have six different pictures and have to guess which game they are from. Six images, six possibilities. Images are screenshots that can be of cutscenes, gameplay, menus, anything from the game in question. Considering how many Call of Duty games there are makes this a nightmare. But you type your guess into the search field and it brings up a list of games that narrows down the search a bit, but can you tell if it’s a Call of Duty game? Maybe a Rainbow Six game? As the scenes progress, the game also gives you hints. The original platform, year of release, and ultimately the publisher can all help you narrow down the sea of options. Knowing which games came out when, can help you decide between Oblivion and Morrowind for example.
Stiles told The Washington Post that he thinks it’s a “real tragedy…” that he won’t be able to play, because he designs the daily post. And he’s right, it’s a surprise to him because the game is fun as hell. Guessing the game from the beginning, the pixelated image makes you feel like a god. But he hopes that a bigger company will eventually buy the game and instead of owning it, he could become a very rich player. If you think you are ready, go ahead and test your skills.
