I am a big fan of Gov. JB Pritzker. His achievements are many. He handled the COVID crisis with grace and consistency with his daily briefings, mandates and great health team. He eventually reached a consensus on criminal justice reform that should be a model for every state. Its actions on climate change go beyond what most other states do.

But his funding to bolster his now adversary’s campaign was simply wrong. It may be legal, but it shows a lack of character, especially compared to his other actions. Money in politics has become a bigger issue since the Supreme Court ruled in its Citizens United decision that corporations have the same rights as individuals. Rich people have the right to spend their money as they see fit. But laws should limit what is spent, how it is spent and for what purpose.

People who run for re-election must be on their track record. They have to ignore their opponent’s attacks and simply explain to the public why their record is superior to their opponent. Pritzker has a great track record. He needs to stick to that and drop the Republican ads where they can.

Redirect your outrage

The mother of the 17-year-old Oak Lawn youth who was arrested by the police has sent her outrage in the wrong direction. Instead of being outraged by the way the police arrested her son, she should be outraged by the fact that her eldest high school son allegedly carried an illegal weapon, that he ran from the police, constantly fought with the police as they did their best to arrest him and tried to reach for the gun in his bag during the arrest. If she had spent a little more time teaching right and wrong, he wouldn’t be in this position right now.

Republicans who testify are no heroes

The Republicans who testified in the Jan. 6 hearings are not as heroic as Liz Cheney would have us believe. Read also : The 5th Annual Detroit Book Festival brings a large crowd to the East Market. Donald Trump’s administration was a disaster for our country from day one, but these people stayed with him through the cruelty and corruption until the very end. And then they behaved like the proverbial rats leaving the sinking ship.

The Republican Party, with or without Trump, remains the greatest threat to our democracy. Cheney is trying to get Trump out of the way and rehabilitate a party that stands for little more than tax cuts for the rich and screwing everyone else. Defeating these enablers and Big Lie candidates, at every level of government, must be our number 1 priority.
