SHANGHAI/TAIPEI, Dec. 24 (Reuters) – China expressed anger on Saturday over a new U.S. defense authorization bill that increases military aid to Taiwan, while Taipei cheered for helping to make the island more secure.

China, which considers democratically-ruled Taiwan as its own territory, has expressed “strong dissatisfaction and strong opposition” to the US National Defense Authorization Act, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The $858 billion military spending measure, which authorizes $10 billion in security assistance and accelerated arms purchases for Taiwan, was found to contain provisions that “cause serious damage to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

China has never renounced the use of force to take control of Taiwan. Taiwan strongly disputes China’s claim to sovereignty, claiming that only the island’s 23 million people can decide its future.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense thanked the U.S. legislation, saying it showed the importance Washington attaches to Taiwan-United States relations. ties and strengthening the security of the island.

Taipei will discuss the details of the bill with Washington and will “gradually speed up the formulation of the budget and the actual disbursement of various Taiwan-friendly legislation,” the ministry said, without elaborating.

The United States is Taiwan’s most important international arms sponsor and supplier, despite having no formal diplomatic ties. US arms sales to Taiwan have been a constant irritant in Beijing-Washington relations.

Taiwan’s armed forces are eclipsed by those of its huge neighbor, China. Its air force in particular has come under pressure as it has had to fight back numerous times to repel Chinese incursions near the island over the last three years.

The defense bill contained an amendment limiting US government purchases of products using computer chips made by a group of Chinese companies.

“The case ignores the facts to exaggerate the ‘threat from China’, mindlessly interferes in China’s internal affairs, and attacks and slanders the Chinese Communist Party, which is a serious political provocation against China,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
