SEE: President Zelensky‘s visit to the US in 90 seconds

Russia sharply criticized Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington, accusing the US of waging an indirect war against it.

President Joe Biden has pledged $1.85bn (£1.45bn) in military aid to Ukraine – including an advanced missile system to help defend against Russian attacks.

In a defiant speech to US lawmakers, Zelensky welcomed the help.

But Russia’s ambassador to the US said these “provocative actions” would lead to an escalation with serious consequences.

Anatoly Antonov told Russian state media that Moscow is “trying to appeal to common sense at all levels” but talks about the delivery of the Patriot missile system to Kiev are “deeply disturbing.”

Patriot missiles are efficient, effective and expensive. The White House says they will help defend Ukrainians from “barbaric Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.”

Moscow complained that there were no calls for peace during President Zelensky’s trip to Washington – and spokesman Dmitry Peskov described this as evidence that the US was fighting a proxy war with Russia.

Peskov added that the delivery of Patriot missiles would not prevent Russia from “achieving its goals during a special military operation.”

“The talks in Washington showed that neither Ukraine nor the United States are striving for peace. They are simply determined to continue the fight,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Russian commentators repeated this, repeatedly accusing the US of “pumping up Ukraine with weapons.”

Some media reports from Moscow ridiculed the Ukrainian leader – the state television channel Channel One compared him to a stripper begging for money. On Wednesday, it was compared to a toilet brush.

Marking his first foreign trip since the invasion began, Zelensky told Congress that his country was “alive and well” and would never surrender to Moscow.

In addition to the $1.85 billion package already announced, the Senate is now awaiting another $45 billion in aid.

Zelensky expressed hope that additional funds would be approved to “help us defend our values and independence.”

However, there are signs that US support is likely to come under greater political scrutiny. Republican support for further aid is declining.

In a November poll, just over half of Republican voters supported aid to Ukraine, down from 80% in March.

The party, which will take control of the House of Representatives in January, has warned that it will not issue a “blank check” for Ukraine.

But President Biden has promised to stick with Ukraine “as long as necessary.”

Zelensky, who traveled by US Air Force jet from the Polish city of Rzeszow, said that “regardless of changes in Congress” he believed his country would have bipartisan support.

He delivered his appeals in emotional fashion ahead of a joint session of Congress – the speech was interrupted by 18 standing ovations by almost all members of Congress, except for some Republican lawmakers who did not applaud.

Speaking in English, he told them his country still stood “against all odds” and predicted a “turning point” in the conflict next year.

To illustrate the brutality of the war, Zelensky recalled US soldiers fighting the Nazis during World War II.

“Russian tactics are primitive. They burn and destroy everything they see. They send convicts to the front, to war. They throw everything against us, just like the other tyranny that in the Battle of the Bulge threw everything it had against the free world.

“Just like the brave American soldiers who held their positions and fought Hitler’s forces during Christmas 1944, the brave Ukrainian soldiers do the same to the forces of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin this Christmas,” he said. “Ukraine holds its lines and will never surrender.”

At the end of his speech, Zelensky presented Congress with a battle flag signed by the defenders of Bakhmut, a frontline city in eastern Ukraine that he visited on the eve of his trip to Washington.

Zelensky’s visit to Washington was his first foreign trip since the start of the Russian invasion

At a joint press conference, Biden told reporters that he was “not at all worried” about keeping the international coalition together.

Despite concerns that some allies may feel strained by the cost of the conflict and disruptions to global food and energy supplies, the US president said he felt “very good” about solidarity support for Ukraine.

As Ukraine’s most important ally, the US has already committed $50 billion (£41 billion) in humanitarian, financial and security assistance – far more than any other country.

On his way home from Washington, Volodymyr Zelensky stopped in Poland, where he met with Polish President Andrzej Duda, one of his strongest allies.

The two discussed their visit to the US as well as their “strategic plans for the future,” Zelensky said.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the U.S. military estimates that at least 100,000 Russian and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured, as well as about 40,000 civilians.

The UN has recorded 7.8 million refugees from Ukraine across Europe, including Russia. However, this number does not include people who have been forced to leave their homes but remain in Ukraine.
