In announcing the role, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Rudd had a lot of experience and contacts in the US.

“Kevin Rudd is an excellent nomination, he brings a lot of credit to Australia by agreeing to this nomination,” said Albanese.

“As someone with connections to the global community in Washington, he will be a big asset.”

Mr. Rudd most recently served as the CEO of the Asia Society’s Institute of International Relations, having spent most of the last decade in the United States working with American politicians and businessmen.

In recent years, he has also campaigned for a royal commission in Rupert Murdoch’s international media organization News Corp.

In a statement, Mr Rudd said he was honored to take on the role.

“Australia is now facing its most challenging security and diplomatic environment in decades,” he said.

“Our national interest continues to be served by the United States’ deepest and most effective strategic engagement in our region, as it has for decades.”

Mr. Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement that the two countries are united in their quest to create an open, stable and prosperous region that “respects” sovereignty.

“With our deepening defense cooperation, including through AUKUS, we have an extensive and mutually beneficial economic relationship with the United States, and we make climate change cooperation a hallmark of our alliance.”

Rudd warned last year that the AUKUS deal had left Australia “strategically naked” for two decades, without an interim submarine exchange programme.

The former prime minister will replace Sinodinos, a former liberal politician who was appointed in 2020.

Nick Greiner, another former liberal politician who was appointed consul general in New York last year, will also be replaced by prominent businesswoman Heather Ridout.

Ms Ridout is the former chief executive officer of the Australian Industry Group.

Senator Wong said the government had appointed “very many” career diplomats, but said there were times when political appointments were preferred to positions.

Mr Albanese said it was “perfectly appropriate” to appoint people familiar with the political structures.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Simon Birmingham said no diplomatic post was more important than that to be filled by Mr Rudd.

“Over the years, the Australian ambassador in Washington has been skillfully staffed by many who represent Australia’s interests, are close to and listen to the then prime minister,” he said in a statement.

He said representing Australia’s interests in the AUKUS deal would be “a most challenging endeavor” that would require Mr Rudd’s “unconditional support and attention”.

“The Coalition counts on Mr Rudd and all new appointments to pursue Australia’s national interests above all else.”
