Nov. 10 (UPI) — An Iowa woman who was confirmed as the oldest living person in the United States earlier this year celebrated her 115th birthday.
Bessie Hendricks celebrated her 115th birthday with a party at Shady Oaks Nursing Home, where she lives in Lake City.
The ceremony was attended by Hendricks’ three surviving children, including daughter Joan Schaffer, who celebrated her 90th birthday the previous day.
“I don’t know how you put it into words,” Schaffer told KCCI-TV. “It’s wonderful that we still have him.”
Hendricks’ own mother died when he was 13, leaving him to take care of his siblings.
“He always cared about his family,” said his son, Leon Hendricks. “He always did. Family came before mom. Always.”
Hendricks became the oldest woman in the United States earlier this year, following Thelma Sutcliffe’s death at 115 years and 108 days. The Gerontology Research Group currently lists her as the fourth oldest person in history. the best in the world.
