Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in overtime just over a year ago in Calgary at the World Cup, postponed until August due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think as a group we came out and found a different way to win the championship,” said Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin. “We all know we didn’t put up the numbers in the Olympics, but we did it tonight with shot blocking, penalty killing and the power play. We had to find other ways to win and Ann-Renée made some saves to get the win.”
Both Canada and the USA returned 18 players from their Olympic rosters. The Americans seemed to absorb the changes to the constitution more quickly than Canada.
The USA went into the finals undefeated, including a 5-2 win over Canada in the preliminary round, with a 47-goal margin compared to Canada’s plus-22.
In addition to moving the puck faster and cleaner than in the loss to the USA, Canada also defended more tenaciously in the box between and below the faceoff points.
Trailing 2-1, the U.S. came close to converting on even two power play opportunities in the third period and also in a furious final minute when Hensley pulled for the extra attacker.
However, Desbiens held off the USA in the third period when Canada was outscored, 12-6.
Canada and the United States have met in the finals of all but one World Cup since the inaugural tournament in Ottawa in 1990. Canada lost to host Finland in the 2019 semifinals.
Canada led 2-0 on two Jenner goals 84 seconds apart until Roque made it 2-1 with her fourth power-play goal of the tournament at 19:39 of the second period.
Amanda Kessel drew the Canadian defenders and Desbiens to her and sent a cross-post pass to an out-of-control Roque to score.
Jenner’s nine goals at the Winter Olympics in February equaled the tournament record, but the World Cup veteran did not score until Saturday’s semi-final win over Switzerland.
Jenner beat Hensley with a wrist shot just below the turning point for a power-play goal at 10:54. Jenner scored first from the same area, but from a sharper angle.
She collected a pass from Poulin at the high board, took the puck deep and handcuffed Hensley with a low long shot at 9:30.
Canada outshot the USA 5-2 in a scoreless first period and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
American striker Alex Carpenter hit the crossbar three minutes before the end.
“It’s not a result we deserved,” said US captain Kendall Coyne Schofield. “There’s a lot to be proud of, a lot to learn, a lot to build on to progress as a group.”
The 2023 women’s championship will be held in Canada in a yet-to-be-announced city, followed by the United States in 2024.
Canada and the United States will also face off in a seven-game Rivalry Series this winter.
On Sunday, the Czech Republic defeated Switzerland 4:2. in the bronze medal game, where Natalie Mlynkova scored two goals. This was the first medal for the Czechs at the world championships.
Japan beat Finland in a penalty shootout after three scoreless periods and overtime. Japan finished fifth with the win, their best finish at the tournament, and will play in Group A in 2023. Finland finished sixth, their worst ever.
