RECIFE, Brazil — American basketball needed a win in Sunday’s AmeriCup tournament and was on track to make it happen.
The Americans’ game against Venezuela was postponed at half-time with the US leading 48-21. Heavy rain caused several leaks inside the Geraldo Magalhães Sports Gym, leading officials to determine that the game could not be safely resumed.
It will resume on Tuesday afternoon, FIBA said, meaning the Americans will have to play on three consecutive days as they try to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Venezuela and the United States have their last group stage games scheduled for Monday.
FIBA allowed the subsequent Group B games on Sunday in the same arena to be played as scheduled. The Dominican Republic (1-1) beat the Virgin Islands (0-2), and Argentina (2-0) defeated Puerto Rico (1-1).
Venezuela’s game is crucial for the US, who entered the Group C game on Sunday with a 0-1 mark after losing to Mexico in Friday’s match. The Americans will need at least one win from their three group stage games, and possibly two wins, to reach the quarterfinals, which begins later this week.
Mexico (2-0) likely earned a spot in the quarterfinals on Sunday, beating Panama (0-2).
The Americans gave up the first basket of the game, then made an 18-2 streak and only continued to increase the lead. The US surged 56% in the first half, compared to Venezuela’s 33%, and held a 24-0 lead on 3-point points.
