The Embassy, in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Communications (MTC) and the US Trade Development Program, organized a workshop to discuss regulatory approaches to bridging the digital divide and deploying resilient wireless communications networks for 5G technology.
The workshop, held August 22-24, brought together government and private sector leaders from the United States, Peru, Australia, Bolivia and Ecuador to discuss their efforts to advance broadband connectivity and bridge the digital divide. Those interested also discussed the advantages of a diverse and competitive market in the transition to 5G and the importance of open and interoperable telecommunications networks.
The Deputy Minister of Communications of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Víctor Álvarez Herrera, mentioned that broadband Internet is the fundamental basis for the development of information and communication technologies and the transformation into a digital society and economy.
In this regard, he added that the government’s approach is to promote greater coverage, especially in rural areas, to bridge the digital gap and thus create a positive socio-economic impact in the country.
John Barrett, the embassy’s Economic Affairs Counselor, stated that “connecting rural Peruvians – and more people in the region – with the Internet will make a real difference in their lives: improving their health and education, providing greater opportunities for entrepreneurship development and of small businesses and ultimately unlocking the true potential of our economies.”
Under the auspices of the Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership (DCCP), the workshop advanced the conversation on effective use of the Universal Service Fund, best practices in broadband regulation, and increasing 5G provider security and provider diversity.
A workshop on rural broadband connectivity boosted Peru’s efforts to reform legal frameworks to promote the deployment of secure and interoperable 5G networks. The workshop also encouraged regional and global cooperation in a critical sector to promote economic growth in the region and beyond. This event also laid the groundwork for future cooperation between governments on network security and provider diversity, which are key components for universal broadband deployment.
Funding for this commitment was made possible by the DCCP, the US government’s multi-year approach to promote an open and competitive Internet, secure 5G networks, and promote safe and responsible business opportunities in countries around the world.
