Between abortion rights, crime, racial tensions, politics and inflation—not to mention the never-ending pandemic—it’s been a tough time in the U.S., leaving many Americans wondering what else is out there.

Every year, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranks the best places to live around the world, as well as the worst places to live, according to the 2022 Global Liveability Index. This year, the list included 172 cities and was based on several categories, including stability, health, culture, education and infrastructure.

Vienna in Austria was recognized as the best place to live in the world, followed by Copenhagen in second place, Zurich in third and Calgary in fourth. In fact, many European and Canadian cities dominated the list of best cities due to factors such as stability and good infrastructure.

But what about the US? This year, the US didn’t make the top 10 list or even the top 25.

The US was not among the top 25 places to live in the world. Why not? Pictured here: Atlanta, which … [+] was named the best place to live in the US.

The highest ranked US city was Atlanta, which ranked 26th overall, making it the best place to live in the country, but only the 26th best place to live in the world. Next on the list was Washington D.C. 29th, Honolulu 30th, Pittsburgh (yes, Pittsburgh) 36th. Los Angeles made up the top five in the US.

So what gives? “Many [U.S. cities] scored relatively low on stability and health compared to some of the best cities in Europe and Canada,” says Upasana Dutt, head of the EIU’s Liveability Index. “There are some long-standing structural factors that prevent many U.S. cities from challenging the top ranked cities in developed economies, such as increasing social unrest, often due to the country’s continued racial inequality.”

Another problem: “U.S. cities also have extraordinarily expensive health care systems that can provide quality care, but only to those who can afford it,” says Dutt.

But it wasn’t all bad news for the US. The top 10 US cities were still in the top tier of livability (defined as a score of 80 and above). “These cities, including more populous cities like Los Angeles and Chicago, score exceptionally well in the culture and education categories,” says Dutt.

Other positive areas for the US: “In the latest edition, there were significant improvements in US cities in the categories of culture and environment, healthcare and education, which were previously affected by the pandemic,” says Dutt. “These improvements are due to the reopening of facilities, the lifting of restrictions and the reduction of waiting times to access public and health services.”

At least the US wasn’t in the top 10 worst places to live in the world. But we still have a long way to go.

Read on for our rankings of the best cities in the US, the best places to live in the world, and the worst places to live in the world.

In a new ranking, Atlanta was named the best city to live in of all US cities and … [+] 26th worldwide.
