Flight costs have skyrocketed since the world reopened to tourism. In the US, pent-up demand for travel has pushed prices up the most, with airfare inflation being blamed on only a handful of destinations. One is New York, voted the most expensive city for air travel right now by TravelPerk.
The data collected by the travel management company proves that the problems currently facing the airline industry are not just operational, or related solely to staff shortages. These are also due to fuel costs and the global economic recession, which is making flying more and more expensive, especially at major airports.
Fares For Some New York Routes Are Up By As Much As 62 Per Cent
According to TravelPerk, travel costs in the eastern US have “risen the most” in the second quarter, the highest in the United States and to some extent one of the top global destinations. More specifically, the city of New York occupies the entire top three for most expensive airfares during the period April 1 – June 30.
Simply put, flying to and from New York has never been more expensive, whether on domestic or international routes. Fares for the always-busy New York-Paris route are up a whopping 62 percent, the strongest increase on the list, while New York-Amsterdam is up a more moderate 36 percent compared to the first quarter.
Domestically, flights from New York to San Francisco on the west coast have “nearly doubled,” indicating that affordable air travel is under serious threat, in Europe and beyond, as long as the global economic upheaval continues. The bleak prospect has even led United to address the US government directly over their foreign policy strategy.
Namely, the country’s reliance on foreign oil, which did not please Americans after Russia launched a violent campaign against neighboring Ukraine, severely disrupting global supply chains. After all, Russia is the second largest oil producer, and the sanctions imposed against Russia have forced countries to look elsewhere – at a price.
August And September May Be The Best Months To Visit New York
Commenting on the data, TravelPerk Chief Revenue Officer JC Taunay-Bucalo confirmed that overpriced airfare in locations such as New York is directly linked to “higher fuel costs, labor shortages and disruptions to the global economy.” In more discouraging news, Taunay-Bucalo expects this upward trend to continue through the rest of the year.
In comparison, there may be some ‘relief’ for travelers who were unable to fly in the summer due to the prohibitive cost. On the same subject : Survey: 8 out of 10 travelers experienced travel problems this year. Amid the oscillating prices, August and September are arguably the best months to travel, when fares should fall significantly, albeit temporarily, ahead of fresh increases expected for November and December.
Expensive tickets aren’t the only thing causing vacationers to reconsider New York as their destination, or even a connecting hub: TravelPerk has found that lodging in the city has “one of the highest inflation rates” for the second quarter of the year, at 49 percent. On the plus side, it doesn’t beat Chicago, up 77 percent, or even Boston, up 63 percent.
This is still no consolation, as these “modest” hotel rates come with cripplingly overpriced flights. Some other international routes where pronounced fares were observed are Berlin-London (43 percent), London-Berlin (42 percent), London-New York (35 percent) and Sao Paulo-Amsterdam (28 percent).
The West Coast Manages To Avoid The Steep Airfare Rises
Interestingly, San Francisco, one of the busiest airports in the western US, has not been hit as hard. Hotels in the city have seen a 22 percent increase in hotel costs, in addition to “lower” airfare inflation rates, quarter-over-quarter, in stark contrast to New York’s skyrocketing numbers. As air travel is marred by exorbitant costs and widespread disruption, passengers may want to consider other (slightly) cheaper means of transport, including rail. Lucky for you, we’ve already rounded up five of the most incredible train journeys in North America in this article, including the scenic New York to Chicago Cardinal Train.
