This 4th of July, instead of celebrating the 235th anniversary of our country’s declaration of independence from a tyrannical king, Americans mourned the loss of our most cherished freedoms taken from us by an illegitimate, extremist, right-wing, supermajority in the United States Supreme Court. In the recently completed mandate of the Court, six extremist judges, five of whom were appointed by presidents who did not win the popular vote, decided that we Americans can no longer freely control our own bodies, live free from the religious coercion of the state, that is, live without fear in a safe and clean environment.

The court overturned the 49-year-old precedent of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion rights for women and girls. The Court’s new ruling allows state legislatures to pass laws banning abortions, criminalizing pregnant women and girls who have abortions, as well as their abortion providers. Right now, 26 states with Republican-majority legislatures are working feverishly to pass and enforce laws that force pregnant women and girls to give birth. In effect, these anti-abortion laws turn every woman and girl who can become pregnant into a potential suspect whose menstrual cycle and sex life are subject to surveillance by law enforcement agents. This government control of women’s bodies is the dream of Catholics and evangelical Christians who have worked to overturn Roe v. Wade from the start based on their religious belief that life begins at conception. With this Supreme Court ruling, all people living in anti-abortion states will now be forced to abide by the strict religious dictates of these fanatical Christian fundamentalist sects. While Republicans claim to be the party of small government and individual liberty, they actually use the power of big brother to control the most intimate decisions in our lives.

The court overturned a longstanding precedent of separation between church and state when it ruled that a public high school football coach in Washington state has the right to lead his team in Christian prayer on the field. Six extremist justices found that the free speech rights of public school officials trumped the rights of public school students to be free from religious coercion by the state. Under this ruling, taxpayers are forced to pay for the religious indoctrination of their children into a religion they did not choose. This ruling will open the door to public school officials who use public schools as recruiting grounds for their army of Christian soldiers.

A court struck down a more than century-old New York state gun law that prohibited carrying a concealed handgun outside the home. Six extremist justices found that the law violated people’s Second Amendment right to bear arms because the state issued public carry permits only to applicants who could demonstrate a special need for self-defense. This ruling is based on a gross misreading of the Second Amendment that completely ignores the intent of the founders that weapons manufactured by a “well-regulated militia, necessary to the security of a free state,” should not be carried in public places where people have a right to live without fear of deadly fire. could erupt at any moment from some dissatisfier with a petty complaint. This verdict of the Supreme Court approves self-proclaimed avengers.

The court limited the EPA’s authority to regulate carbon emissions from power plants, severely limiting the federal government’s ability to deal with climate change at a time when climate scientists are warning us that we must act now to save our habitable planet for future generations. Six extremist justices believe it is the “right” of fossil fuel corporations to make profits over people’s rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In the future, this ruling will be cited by all corporate interests to limit the federal government’s ability to enact regulations that protect the public interest.

All of these Supreme Court decisions are the culmination of a long-term Republican project to turn America into a dystopian state where government agents are empowered to monitor citizens’ private lives, where religious fanatics run the public school system, where armed brownshirts patrol the streets, and where heartless corporations are transforming our planet to hell. Welcome to the United States of Dystopia.
