Ukrainian defenders fought on Saturday to take Russian troops to several levels, officials said, as the United States urged China to join the West in protesting against the entry into the aftermath of the angry G-20 summit.
A missile attack on the northeastern city of Kharkiv has claimed three lives, its governor said, although a major Russian offensive looked south-east of Luhansk and Donetsk.
The two provinces, parts of which were occupied by pro-Russian separatists before the fighting broke out in February, include the eastern industrial province of Donbas.
Ukrainian officials announced the beating on Saturday, while the British Ministry of Defense said Moscow was recruiting troops from across Russia near Ukraine.
Donetsk provincial governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said in a telegram text message that a Russian weapon had hit Druzhkivka, a city in the backyard, and cited the explosion of some civilian areas.
