Abortion rights protests in the US (file image)
Washington: Hundreds of people gathered outside the White House on Saturday to protest the US Supreme Court ruling that overturned the 1973 Roe v Wade precedent that legalized abortion in the country. Protesters waved banners and shouted slogans such as “My body, my choice,” AFP reported.
According to reports, around 1,000 people, mostly women, were protesting outside the White House. In particular, US President Joe Biden spends the weekend at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The protest was organized by the Women’s March in response to the Supreme Court ruling. The agitation took place a day after Biden signed an order to protect abortion rights throughout the United States.
The confession also aimed to ensure access to reproductive health services across the country. It will include access to surgical and medical abortion and contraception and protection of patients’ privacy.
However, the order rejected a proposal by some leading Democrats in the Senate and House, which demanded that the Biden administration allow abortion services on federal land in states where abortion is prohibited.
On June 24, the United States Supreme Court overturned the 1973 landmark
ruling that recognized a woman’s constitutional right to abortion across the country. In a 6-3 ruling driven by the Conservative majority, the court upheld a Republican-backed Mississippi law banning abortion. It sparked protests across the United States. In particular, a draft version of the ruling indicating that the court would probably overturn the Roe v. Wade judgment was leaked in May this year.
