It feels like we’ve been waiting for Japan to open up for a long, long time. After two years of a total ban, the trucks were finally allowed to return to the country – despite many restrictions.
The country reopened in April to some foreign residents, business travelers and foreign students, then opened its borders to a limited number of international tourists. The current stage of Japan’s reopening has been described as a period of “experimental tourism” – but things are about to get a little easier.
According to Japanese news agencies, the country’s government is considering ending its requirement that all travelers take pre-departure tests. Currently, all visitors entering Japan must produce a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure.
In addition, Japan is about to increase the daily limit of tourists entering the country from 20,000 to 50,000, effectively doubling the number of people able to visit. Both of these changes could take effect in the next few weeks.
For now, however, Japan remains in its ‘experimental tourism’ stage. The ‘experiments’ come in the form of very few packaged tours, which the government is analyzing before deciding when the country will resume normal levels of tourism. While private tourists are still prohibited from visiting Japan, if you don’t mind joining a tour company, you are free to go on that trip of a lifetime!
Needless to say, there are more than a few problems with who can actually participate in these ‘experimental tourism’ tours. Currently open only to triple-decker travelers from the USA, Australia, Thailand and Singapore, all travelers must book through travel agencies.
Now the entry rules in Japan are strict – to say the least. Currently there is a limit of 20,000 arrivals per day and only those from a list of 106 countries (see the full list here) can enter.
Schools or companies must sponsor individuals who wish to enter, and visitors must self-quarantine upon arrival. Now, you need to have proof of a negative Covid test taken 72 hours before departure, a signed copy of this form (committing to comply with local Covid regulations), and an online questionnaire. and complete. Quarantine rules are a bit strict, too. Everyone must take a PCR test before leaving for Japan, and it must come back negative. If you have taken three jabs, you must quarantine yourself at home for the first three days in the country, then take another test. If you are unvaccinated or have had less than three jabs, the rules are the same except you must quarantine yourself in a hotel. Phew! We said the rules are strict.
