Financial services giant Citi Bank is expanding its penetration into the travel business by launching Citi Travel in collaboration with Booking.com.
The launch will take place at the beginning of the fourth quarter of this year, the company said.
According to research from Citi Travel and Booking.com, Americans are eager to travel, but often plan their trips around sales or promotions to snag better deals. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but it prevents travelers from going on vacation or going to a date-specific family event.
Citi and Booking.com understand this, which is why they created the Citi Travel portal platform.
“Leveraging the scale and reach of Booking.com, the new Citi Travel provides an unmatched breadth of hotel booking options,” the companies said in a statement. “With more than 1.4 million hotels available worldwide – from boutiques to favorite chains – there is an option for every budget, type of vacation and desire.”
The cooperation between Citi and Booking.com is part of a general trend of financial institutions and banks increasingly entering the travel sector. These include Capital One and Hopper Cloud; the launch of UK-based bankrate app Revolut, backed by Expedia; Acquisition of the TravelBank application by the U.S. Bancorp; American Express’ exclusive booking site on GetYourGuide; and JPMorgan Chase, which will soon launch ChaseTravel.com for all Chase members.

Paying for travel with your cards, loyalty points or a combination of the two. About 22 percent of respondents to the Citi and Booking.com survey say that not being able to redeem or earn rewards is one of the biggest obstacles they face when booking a vacation.
