(CNN) – United Airlines is sounding the alarm and telling its staff that there will be more summer flights than air traffic controllers can handle, an issue that could contribute to more flight disruptions this summer.
The United Chief Operating Officer expressed his frustration in a note to staff, saying until there are more air traffic controllers, they expect the US aviation system to remain challenged this summer.
He noted that the situation is particularly bad in New York and Florida.
Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg met with the heads of the airlines last month and said on Tuesday that he did not agree.
Buttigieg said air traffic control staff were not responsible for most of the delays and cancellations this summer. He said there are other issues at stake, such as airlines pushing pilots into early retirement.
