The Dallas Mavericks pulled off one of the most dramatic wins of the season on Thursday with a double overtime victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, but not without some controversy along the way.

That controversy did not subside when the NBA released its Final Two-Minute Report a day later.

Neither team was very happy with the performance of the game, but the Lakers were especially incensed when their comeback came just short to end the game under control. The biggest point of contention was the game-winner by Lakers wing Troy Brown Jr., who blocked Mavericks’ Tim Hardaway Jr. to send the game to overtime.

LeBron James was especially mad. Per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Brown offered a diplomatic response to reporters in the Lakers locker room after the game, but when a reporter followed up with referee Joshua Tiven’s explanation — specifically that Hardaway only made “five high contacts,” which is legal — James chimed in from 20 feet away:

“No, he’s fired,” James said forcefully for everyone in the room to hear. “It’s dirty. No matter what [Brown] says, it’s f***ing dirty. That s*** is clear, and they should have called it.”

Those are the words from a man who is happy to lose a game 119-115 and fall to 19-23 on the season. It would be a gut punch of a game even with a perfect performance, as Luke Doncic hit a last-minute 3-pointer to force the first and second overtimes.

The NBA confirmed the official’s termination the next day, but not in the way James and the Lakers had hoped. The Final Two Minutes Report identified seven egregious calls and non-calls that the officials missed in the final two minutes of regulation and the two overtime periods, but confirmed that the non-call on Hardaway was correct.

Tiven’s comments after the game were backed up by the NBA’s explanation:

Hardaway Jr. (DAL) legally countered Brown Jr.’s jump shot attempt. (LAL) and touches the ball. Any “high-five” contact is considered incidental.

If the Lakers wanted something to feel angrier about, the league admitted that the officials missed two calls on the same possession at the end of the first overtime. With less than 15 seconds left, James drove to the basket while being guarded by Doncic, but was blocked by Christian Wood. A scramble for the ball resulted in Doncic recovering it to force double overtime.

In the L2M Report, the NBA noted that Wood “initiates contact with James’ left hand before blocking the shot,” and Doncic initiated contact with Wenyen Gabriel, which “affects his ability to control rebounds .” Basically, two lies lost on one shot.

Of course, the Lakers also benefited from some officiating incidents. Los Angeles took advantage of the other five missed calls in the Report, and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban called the performance the “worst game in care” on Twitter.
