“Okay, let’s tick a few boxes here. This is a team coming off a 5-7 season with a freshman head coach. Sure, it’s Auburn, and it has won the national title of the century, so it’s not a true “TCU” program, but it meets enough criteria to make the list. Auburn has proven time and time again that if everyone involved in this program is moving in the same direction, it can do great things.”

Miami (FL)

“I already regret writing this story. Oh well, we’re in too deep now, and have no one to blame but myself. I am one of many who bought too much in Miami ahead of the 2022 season. I did not consider how much coach Mario Cristobal’s rebuilding roster had in mind. That said, while thinking Miami could win the ACC is a bridge too far, it should be a more likely outcome than 5-7.

Texas A&M

“What have I done? First Miami, then Nebraska, and now Texas A&M. If only Texas went 5-7, I could put him in and finish the Hypebeast Superfecta. Look, it’s hard to believe the Aggies. I don’t, but you can’t deny that this is a list of underperforming talent in 2022. I was never in the “Texas A&M is a playoff contender” crowd, but 5-7? That shouldn’t be possible with the talent there.”

Nebraska

“Like Auburn, Nebraska had a freshman coach taking over with Matt Rhule returning to the college game. Unlike Auburn and TCU, Nebraska isn’t going 5-7 this season; it goes 4-8, so there’s more reason to redeem in the standings. Like Miami, the road to Nebraska may not be as thorny as others make it out to be. While the Big 12 is one of the best conferences in college football this season, there’s no question that neither Texas nor Oklahoma living up to their potential is helping TCU.

“In a sense, Michigan State is the real TCU. The Spartans went 2-5 in Mel Tucker’s first season at East Lansing, which was a step down from 7-6 in 2019, but one that wasn’t quite as predictable. Tucker is a late season employee after Mark Dantonio’s unexpected retirement, and just after Tucker moves into his new office, a once-in-a-century global pandemic hits. All of which was a little less anticipated than Michigan State’s 11-2 implosion and Peach Bowl appearance in 2021.
