I am a 30 year old male who works full time in an office. On the side, I also draw a webcomic and am trying to develop a (potential) career in digital art. Playing video games is one of my favorite ways to relax after a busy day. The problem is, when I get into the game, I AM into it. I have little free time, and my preoccupation with the game can interfere with activities that are more important to me, such as working on my art. Obviously, some of this problem can be solved by working on myself when I don’t see and want, but I still want to know: Can you recommend some games that are easier than others from it? And do you have any tips on how to pace yourself while playing new games?

Well, Lost in the Middle World, that’s a tricky question! When I get involved in a sport I love, I also have a hard time letting go. And even though I cover the video game industry for a living, it can be difficult to justify the time-consuming games, since I have to report and write, and find time for other hobbies like painting and reading. It’s a work in progress for me, too. But I have some tips and game recommendations that have made things easier for me – and they may work for you too.

When my life gets too busy (read: hectic) I try to stick to games that are easy to jump in and out of. I found that Citizen Sleeper, which I mentioned briefly in the previous Dear Polygon, is perfect for this, because the game works in a fast cycle that seems like a natural part of books. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge can work similarly: The levels are fast (about every 10 minutes) and good for short bursts between tasks.

Although it takes place in a large open world, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is also perfect for this kind of staccato rhythm. I can break the game by putting the play sessions in the same field as the exit to collect the Pokémon, creating a convenient storage space to delete the game once I get back to camp and update the Pokédex. Have you tried Neon White? Its seamless platforming and shooting are well-designed for fast sessions, as long as you’re not repeatedly trying to beat your friend’s low time on the boards. Finally, against all odds, I ended up getting into Fortnite. Its no-build mode has removed one of the most intimidating aspects of the multiplayer game, and it’s easier than ever for me to play around before going back to paint.

I understand, however, that none of these games are very similar to the games you mentioned in the Dear Polygon form. You wrote Elden Ring, and it caught on. It’s those kinds of games, like The Witcher 3 and The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, that pull me in and make it hard to exercise any control over my time management. Lately, I’ve found it helpful to put these games aside until I know for sure that I’ll have tons of free time to get lost in their worlds – moments when I’m good and my other interests fall by the wayside. . I think it makes sense to have an ebb and flow in that, but I’m always thinking about making sure it doesn’t stay that way forever.

One thing that has been helpful in managing all of my various hobbies while also keeping a full time job is really boring. I organize things.

It’s really against my nature, as someone who likes violence and behavior – but it works. Now, my schedule is still free, and I often break it. But just having a plan helps me get started and eliminate distractions when it’s time to dive into a new book or video game. For example, I spend the few hours I have before work painting and drawing in my sketchbook. That’s when I feel most naturally creative and happy to paint. And of course, if I don’t feel that way some mornings, I don’t. And that’s good. My lunch break is the perfect opportunity to work my way through whatever book I’m reading so I can spend the time after dinner playing video games.

It’s not a strict schedule that I have to stick to every day. But creating a free time map where your hobbies fit right in has been very helpful in keeping up with my passions. A little planning, combined with games that let you go on a merry-go-round, can do wonders for your next vacation – during which time you can dive into the next open-world game without any distractions.
