Title IX allowed me to compete for—and win—a substantial scholarship to attend the college of my choice, setting me on a personal and career path that will shape the rest of my life. And West Virginia law protected me so I could safely and fairly play the sport I love—without the worry of a male athlete taking my place on the field, as is increasingly and tragically common in other states. Truth matters and it is crucial that our laws and policies recognize the physical differences between men and women. I grew up playing soccer, including playing pick-up games with my brothers and other boys who are generally faster, stronger and bigger than the girls. As any female athlete can tell you firsthand, sports demonstrate the biological differences between men and women.

It’s actually nice; the same, yet different; worth defending and protecting. Women had to fight for their place in sports. Title IX has protected us for 50 years, and we can’t throw it away now. We’ve come too far, we’ve fought too hard.
I want to make sure that future generations of women can experience the life lessons they learned in sports: perseverance and never giving up, the thrill of winning after working hard to defend or score a goal, just being on the field and everything else that comes along , and your teammates’ backs no matter what. No girl should be denied these experiences, sidelined, or told she is second to boys in athletics.

As the court found in my case, fairness in women’s sports laws like West Virginia’s is consistent with the US Constitution and Title IX. Eighteen states have passed laws protecting female athletes, and I hope more states join the fight and more courts uphold these just laws. If we want a future where girls can earn a competitive scholarship and a spot on a team, we need to protect fairness in sports. And that starts with acknowledging that men and women are different—and that’s not just okay. This is good, right and beautiful.
