Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin is in critical condition after collapsing during Monday’s game between the Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals, the NFL said in a statement. The league officially suspended the game after an hour-long outage.
Hamlin received CPR on the field, ESPN reported, and was surrounded by teammates, some of them in tears, after being injured during a fight with Bengals receiver Tee Higgins.
Higgins led the attack with a right shoulder that hit Hamlin in the chest. Hamlin then wrapped his arms around Higgins’ shoulders and helmet to pull him down. Hamlin stood up, seemed to adjust the face mask with his right hand, then about three seconds later fell backwards and lay motionless.
Hamlin was treated on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics, the NFL said. He was taken by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The NFL announced more than an hour after the injury that play would not resume.
“Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available,” the league said in a statement. “The NFL is in constant contact with the NFL Players Association, which agrees to postpone the game.”
The ambulance was on the field four minutes after Hamlin fell, and many players were crying. The quarterbacks Josh Allen of Buffalo and Joe Burrow of Cincinnati embraced.
Hamlin collapsed at 8:55 p.m., and when he was taken off the field 16 minutes later, the Bills gathered in prayer.
Five minutes after the ambulance left, play was suspended and the players slowly walked off the pitch to their locker rooms.
The Bengals led 7-3 with a score of 5-58 by the end of the first quarter of the match between the teams fighting for the first place in the AFC playoffs.
During a late Monday night media conference call, the NFL did not provide any medical updates regarding Hamlin or answer questions about whether the game would be made up. The Bills are reportedly returning to Buffalo while some members of the organization stay in Cincinnati to be near Hamlin.
The 24-year-old Safety spent five years in college in Pittsburgh – his hometown – and appeared in 48 games for the Panthers during that period. He was a second-team All-ACC as a senior, was named team captain, and was selected to play in the Senior Bowl.
He was drafted in the sixth round by the 2021 Bills, played in 14 games as a rookie, then became a starter this year as Micah Hyde missed the season with an injury.
Coming into play, the 6-foot, 200-pound Hamlin had 91 tackles, including 63 solo tackles and a 1 1/2 sack.
