There are a number of reasons why I honored this article with a photo of the cover of Charley Pierce’s beautiful collection of essays.

Not the least of which is that they are conveniently perceived and beautifully rendered.

Writing on any subject doesn’t get much better. See.

But also if, like some around here, you have little other life and feed yourself with athletic competitions, which means being a sportsman (gender neutral), it was a veritable smorgasbord of a weekend.

With the peripheral advantage for some, being able to watch without their favorite teams participating, eliminating the fear factor.

Just like Buckeye fans. Like Cardinal fans. Just like Lions fans.

It all started, in this environment anyway, with a Friday night sighting of an octopus on the ice.

Some readers can get the reference even if they don’t care.

It’s a Detroit Red Wing thing. And the resurgent Wings under new coach Derek Lalonde opened their season with a 3-0 shutout of Montreal’s Habs. Then that followed with a Saturday night W over the Devils in Jersey, 5-2.

Remember this name: 6-8 rookie Elmer Soderblom.

Speaking of athletic endeavors that old schoolers on this side of the pond pay little attention to, there must be a mention of Tottenham Hotspurs 2-0 win over Everton in Saturday’s EPL.

Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Man City at Anfield on Sunday was also a hoot.

Plus, there was all that baseball, including one game that turned into a double header.

I love that u-dogs Padres and Phillies have progressed to NLCS. If the Guardians, who should have been called Spyders to keep it in Cleveland tradition, can shut down the evil realm tonight, that would be really great.

Sunday meant NFL Red Zone, which is always a treat. Especially for the hour that starts at 3:15 PM.

Especially if you have a fight between elites like KC vs. Buffalo, Mahomes vs. all. Although Tony Romo could use a thorazine infusion.

Especially when doormats like the Jets and Giants start to show some courage.

Not so, especially if U van L’s son, Lamar Jackson, continues his fumblitis. Should have signed a contract, my husband.

But of course it was all topped off by college pigskin, where Saturday has been a day like none since 1993.

It was the first time since that time that there were three matches on the same day in which schools competed at least 5-0.

Oklahoma State at Texas Christian.

And the one that lived up to all the hype and then some, Alabama in Tennessee.

That featured a QB duel between a ready as a signal caller as always played the game, Bryce Young, and rising star Hendon Hooker. Plus the emergence of another superwideout, Rocky Top’s Jalin Wyatt, who scored 6 passes for 207 yards, 5 of which were touchdowns.

The match was won after the Crimson Tide kicker missed an FG with :15 on the clock. That was enough time for Hooker to get the Vols into FG range, where Chase McGrath punched the pigskin through the uprights from 40 yards away for a 52-49 W at the buzzer.

Fans stormed the field, which cost the school a fine of one hundred large SECs. “No problem,” said the lavish, cigar-smoking school prexy.

The Horned Frogs gathered the Cowboys in OT. In the Big House, the Wolverines showed they are real as they trampled the Nittany Lions.

In addition, there were three other games in which both schools were ranked.

Kentucky raced past Cowbell State. The nation’s biggest surprise, that would be the Syracuse Orange, went undefeated, beating the Wolfpack.

And, as if we needed more drama, in the PAC After Dark nitecap, the Utes rocked Southern California with a two-point conversion with seconds left, 43-42.

All that and college hoops is just over the horizon.

I know a sportsman in his happy place.
