Dec 28 (Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc ( AMZN.O ) is working on a stand-alone app for watching sports content, The Information reported on Wednesday, citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan.
Sports remain a major draw for live viewing as American audiences increasingly switch from pay TV subscriptions to streaming apps.
The move will likely complement Amazon’s effort to double down on sports programming through its Prime Video service, a key channel for attracting consumers to its shopping platform.
Amazon already owns the rights to stream games such as the National Football League’s Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League soccer games in the UK, setting it up to better compete with sports streaming leader Walt Disney Co. (DIS.N).
Last week, Alphabet Inc’s ( GOOGL.O ) YouTube unit also signed a multi-year deal to exclusively stream the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package of games in the United States.
According to the report, it was unclear when Amazon would launch the sports app and whether it would follow through with the plan.
Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The company has been overhauling unprofitable business units and laying off some staff to cover rising costs and a drop in demand as consumers and businesses, wary of inflation, spend less.
