ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have fired first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett with two games left in the season.
Senior assistant coach Jerry Rosburg, who was hired by the team earlier in the season to help Hackett with his playing time management, was named the interim coach. Special teams coordinator Dwayne Stukes and offensive line coach Butch Barry were also fired. Mike Mallory will coach the special teams unit and Ben Steele is the intermediate offensive line coach.
Owner and CEO Greg Penner said he is leading the search for a new coach with help from GM George Paton, in whom he expressed confidence Monday while announcing Hackett’s firing.
Firing Hackett with two games into a lost season allows Penner to begin his search for a replacement immediately.
The Walton-Penner group bought the Broncos for $4.65 billion last summer, a world record for a professional sports franchise.
On Sunday, the Broncos (4-11) were blown out by the equally crazy Los Angeles Rams 51-14 as Russell Wilson threw three interceptions and was sacked six times. The game featured a sideline spat between backup QB Brett Rypien and guard Dalton Risner, and pass rusher Randy Gregory threw a punch at a Rams player after the play.

Hackett replaced Vic Fangio last January, but was unable to build an offense that matched Wilson’s.
The Broncos have missed the playoffs for seven straight seasons and extended their string of losing records to six.
