Text description provided by architects. Energy-neutral sports complex VenhoevenCS for the Erasmus University. The sports building at the Woudestein Rotterdam campus has opened. The sports building stimulates a social and healthy student life at the Woudestein campus of Erasmus University Rotterdam. VenhoevenCS architecture + urban design designed this sports complex to accommodate more than fifty sports, setting the sports hall on a compact plot. The complex functions are energy-neutral and the vibrant public interiors are made of materials that are collected in a closed loop and reused. The central axis through the building functions as both destination and transit and is a true physical and social link. The sports building was officially opened in the fall of this year.

The new sports building of Erasmus University Rotterdam is a training and professional facility; a place for approximately 11,000 students, colleagues and top athletes to practice and play team sports. The sports building marks the entrance to the Woudestein university campus. Respecting the layout of the campus, we arranged all sports facilities on a compact plot, arranging them in stacked “sports boxes”. The boxes form two volumes, slightly offset from each other, connected by a public core.
This common area connects functions, sports and athletes as well as both sides of the campus. “The inner street really is a real physical and social link; bright, high, with stairs and walkways, lots of greenery and of course a bar. So seeing all these athletic students really encourages participation.” – Manfred Wansink, architect and partner-director of VenhoevenCS. Transparency and rhythm. The sports building is surrounded by a glass and aluminum shell with the interplay of horizontal articulations and vertical fins in multiple rhythms.
The complex’s slightly curved eastern façade opens with a full-height glass corner. Also, both end ends of the middle aisle are made entirely of glass. Of course, transparency maximizes views, allows a smooth transition from inside to outside, and allows daylight to enter; it also means lively places: public functions, at street level and above, as well as sports activities that do not require an enclosed hall.
Rebuild ecosystems. Due to the high ambitions in terms of sustainability and energy consumption shared by VenhoevenCS and Erasmus University, the building is energy-neutral, which is an increasingly urgent requirement. Full facilities for capturing, retaining, exchanging and reusing water and solar energy are built in; and minimize its consumption. These are the guiding principles for all VenhoevenCS projects, such as the Aquatic Center in Paris 2024 and the new sports complexes in Lokeren (BE, 2023). In addition, we fashioned the public interior from building materials collected during demolition rounds.
For example, metal panels from a former juvenile detention center in Zeist (Netherlands) are used again as ceilings, and 1,100 m2 of wooden floors in the Eindhoven University of Technology pavilion have been given a new lease of life as façade panels that characterize the inner street. By emphasizing this reuse, we want to socially engage and inspire this community of students to contribute to the circular economy.
