The Roland-Story football team bounced back from a 47-7 loss to South Hamilton at East Marshall Friday in Le Grande.
The Norsemen built a huge 34-0 lead at the half and cruised to the win to improve to 1-1 on the season.
“We want to see a big uptick from Week 1 to Week 2 and we saw that from our guys,” Roland-Story coach Matt Finn said. “It was a total team effort – all hands-on-floor play. I’m proud of how everyone stepped up and continued to work hard. Now we have to prepare for another big game at home next week. I’m happy seeing how we got better this week.”
Roland-Lebarin has a tough job next week when the Norsemen host the fourth-ranked Nevada team in Class 3A. The Cubs (1-1) are coming off a heartbreaking 35-31 loss to No. 7 (2A) West Marshall Friday at Nevada.
The Roland-Story cross country team opens its season Aug. 29 at the Lynx Invitational in Webster City.
The Norse girls finished fourth out of nine teams with 118 points. Ballard, ranked third in 3A, won the girls team title with 33 points. North Polk, ranked seventh in 3A, say the second and 66 then Fort Dodge St. Edmond, number four in 1A, finished third with 79.

Roland-Labarin’s offense amassed 374 yards rushing.
“Our offensive line played really well,” Finn said. “It’s been a long time since Roland-Story hit 374 runs in one game and that can’t happen by accident.”
With leading rusher Jonovan Wilkinson out, Jake Berggren had a breakout game with 110 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. Quarterback Hesston Johnson added 95 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, Gavin Carpenter 44 yards on just two carries, John Martin 41 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts, Sam Knoll 37 yards and a score and Luke Patton 29 yards and two.
“I’m really proud of how our depth showed up and competed in the big moments,” Fin said. “We’ve got Hesston Johnson dialing in a big part of his offensive game using his legs and Luke Patton coming in big time. And I have to give big credit to Sam Knoll and Gavin Carpenter in particular for stepping up. at important times.”
Kale Lande added two receptions for 59 yards for the Roland Garros on offense.
The Norsemen were equally strong defensively, holding East Marshall to 145 total yards and finishing the night with three sacks.
“Our defense played really well,” Finn said. “I liked Coach Janes’ program and obviously our guys went out and put that program in place. Holding an opponent to the bottom three is not something we look forward to. We had a successful campaign with great picks from Boaz. Clark and Dillon Lettow. Overall, I like our energy there.”
Charlie Watts had 7.5 sacks and half a sack, Carter Flattebo five stops, Carpenter 4.5 and Christian Chelsvig four. Patton had 1.5 sacks, Aaron Peyton and Jaxson Kadolph each had half a sack to go along with Clark and Lettow’s interceptions.

Claire Truesdell led the RS girls in Webster City
With leading runner Lauryn Kilstofte dealing with hip and knee injuries, sophomore Claire Truesdell stepped up as the top runner for the Roland-Story girls team to start the season.
Truesdell placed sixth at the Lynx Invitational with a 5-kilometer time of 21.5.11 seconds. Kilstofte still finished in 18th place despite her injury with a time of 22:24.03.
Makenna Carlson ran 22:36.43 to place 20th. Brooke Thomson finished 38th in 24:53.95 and Olivia Younes was 49th in 26:31.62.
Ballard’s Paityn Noe, ranked No. 1 in 3A, won the girls race in a new girls 5k state record time of 17:23.60.
In the boys track Roland-Story was 12th out of 16 teams with 103 points. The North Polk team finished second in 3A and won the boys team title with 45 points.
Sophomore Evan Voga placed 35th with a 5k time of 19:40.83 as the top runner for the Roland-Story boys. Luccas Hart was 65th in 21:08.01, Lucas Wuebker 72nd in 21:19.55, Tate Lande 74th in 21:28.65 and Nolan Rhoad 75th in 21:29.54 as the other runners who scored for the Norse boys.
North Polk’s Zach Sporaa won the men’s title in 15:58.88.
