As the Hawks look for more wins across all of their programs, there have been moments to add new names to the school record books in 2022. (Note: Achievements are listed without ranking.)

Baseball rebounds

After an early exit from the 2021 postseason, the Hawks bounced back this year with two Substate wins with a team that looks set to be even better in 2023.

In the 14 games, Woodward had only three wins. Then the Boosters stepped up with five wins in the next eight games to wrap up the regular season. That was enough momentum to give the Hawks two Ws, who won with a combined 23-3 win over West Central Valley and ACGC – further alerting WCAC to what could be in the future.

Few games have been as thrilling as the 11-0 win over WCV, when the Hawks chalked up seven runs in the first inning. That came from a healthy diet of punching and precise baserunning, which saw four players hit two runs that day – Sam Sejnoha, Shaefer Hanson, Kaden Seeman and Don David. And on the rubber, Brody Nardini threw a 4.2-inning shutout accompanied by seven strikeouts while allowing just three batters on base.

The next game against ACGC ended on the same score but started on a completely different note as the Hawks were down 2-0 after one inning.

But Nardini had more in the tank, coming to support roles where the defense behind him kept all seven batters off base paths. Nardini also provided a pop from the box where he scored twice along with three RBI from three doubles.

Deputy’s big performance

The night might not have ended as positively overall as the Hawks lost this year’s season opener. This may interest you : Fireworks show business upturns despite higher costs. But within the game, Grace Deputy did everything in her power to reverse that result as she visited places no other Hawk had visited.

Deputy dropped everything with a school record of 33 points and 21 rebounds. Although unofficial, it is believed to be the first time a Woodward Granger player has recorded a 30/20 night. Fewer than 10 players accomplished this feat across Iowa last season.

Fleshner takes on state

The cross-country world, which exploded on stage by winning the first meeting of the season, was forced to take notice of Woodward-Granger this season thanks to rookie Eva Fleshner. Fleshner, who has been without a representative at the state convention for several seasons, looked ready to make her way to Fort Dodge from the second she hit the trails this season.

With a time of 21 minutes and 44 seconds in the first-ever competition of the year, the newcomer phenom would have finished 84th at this year’s state meet (including all runners from team qualifiers) if that had been their peak. But despite an injury late in the season that kept her out of several events, she only improved.

Fleshner left the season with a 45th place finish at 8:52 p.m. But she showed even more potential throughout the season as she posted a personal best of 18:43, which put her on a trajectory to finish even better in future seasons.

Football records

The Hawks had the rare pleasure of having two receivers to lean on. And with a second year in Woodward’s new system, they both found themselves in the textbook.

With 51 passes for 513 yards and four touchdowns, Nardini finished his career with 98 receptions for the school record. Dane Polich, who defended the most touchdowns on the team, recorded 41 receptions for 696 yards and six points. His 18 touchdowns also set the team’s new high score.

Driving the two was Carter Moran, whose 1,960 yards and 15 touchdowns this year were the most for a Woodward quarterback since Taylor Ashman threw a line for 1,506 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Nardini’s record night

Brody Nardini made his third appearance on the list, floating against Martensdale-St Marys in this season’s season opener. Nardini led the team to a 70-33 win from goal and was responsible for 31 points, setting another Woodward-Granger school record.

Nardini, a man obsessed with the floor, shot 10 of 16 overall and 5 of 6 from three-point range. That put him in a good position to improve on his junior season when he was averaging 13.5 points per game.
