Mark Woodley shows news viewers what happens “when you ask a sports guy to come cover a snow storm on the morning show.”
The KWWL sports anchor went viral after his live coverage of the blizzard-like conditions in Waterloo, Iowa, receiving more than two million views on Twitter for his candid comments about being out. Bad weather on Thursday.
“This is a very long show. Tune in for the next two hours to watch me slowly get up,” he announced on air.
Woodley explained that he was assigned to do an early morning weather report hours before he had to wake up regularly after sports events in the area were canceled due to the weather.
“What better way to ask a sports boy to come five hours before he normally wakes up and stand in the wind and snow and cold and tell other people not to do the same?” he told the audience.
He added, “I didn’t know it was 3:30 in the morning – until today.”
As the broadcast continued, he shared that his friend Clint had received a “good ending” from work following the storm and told viewers, “I’ve got good news, and I’ve got bad news. The good news is that I can. I still feel it.” In my face right now, the bad news is that I wish I couldn’t.”
Although he covered the weather mostly early Thursday morning, his coverage ended up gaining new fans in people like Judd Apatow, David Cross, and NFL Network host Rich Eisen.
Apatow called the Iowa sportscaster a “legend,” while Cross replayed the tape. Eisen shared the video on Twitter and wrote, “I’m so excited for this TV job that just came my way. Well played, Mark.”

Woodley also received some praise from people around Iowa.
Radio host Todd Brommelkamp shared the news clip, writing, “You don’t get to be the 1-time Iowa Sportsman of the Year by staying in your lane.”

The network also shared a story about Woodley’s segment on their website, writing in the piece, “No Woodley’s harmed from making the morning news.”
