A local Iowa sportswriter who was reassigned to weather coverage amid an Arctic outburst this week made sure viewers back home knew how unhappy he was with his new role.
Mark Woodley, a sportscaster and reporter at KWWL in Waterloo, Iowa, donned a grimace in tandem with his heavy winter gear as he reluctantly endured sub-zero temperatures and blizzard conditions on air.
“I usually do sports; everything here is canceled for the next two days, so what better time to ask the sportsman to come about five hours earlier than he would normally wake up, go stand out in the wind and the snow, and cold and tell others not to do the same,” Woodley said live.
A compilation of Woodley’s crotchety cover of the station’s morning show went viral on Thursday after he posted a video to Twitter with the caption: ‘That’s what you get when you ask the jock over cover a blizzard on the morning show.”
The reel of zingers came from about 14 separate live shots Woodley took during the Thursday morning newscast, he told Insider.
Woodley, who said he used to work evening news shows, which are only 30 minutes long and “usually indoors”, seemed to grow grumpier as the morning show of several hours continued, to the apparent delight of his colleague.
“It’s a very long show, listen for the next two hours to see me getting more and more grumpy,” Woodley joked.
Woodley told Insider he was reporting about 30 feet from the backdoor of KWWL’s main station, so he admittedly had a chance to warm up between takes. But with the wind chill making the temperature feel like minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the moments spent outside were enough to make him naturally grumpy.
KWWL’s weekday morning show starts at 4:30 a.m., and Woodley said he was between the station and off until 8 a.m. local time.
“I didn’t even realize it was 3:30 a.m. too — until today,” Woodley joked on air.
At one point during his ordeal, Woodley appeared to quibble about his colleague’s reassignment, which involved following the oncoming storm, presumably inside a hot vehicle.
“Clint got the most out of this deal, this thing is heated,” Woodley said. “The exterior is currently unheated.”
The temperature outside, Woodley said, continued to drop throughout the morning show, even as the sun slowly began to rise.
“I have good news and bad news: the good news is that I can still feel my face right now. The bad is that I kind of wish I couldn’t,” he said. -he declares.
By the end, Woodley was begging to get back to his regular job.
“I’m pretty sure…you added an extra hour to this show just because someone likes torturing me,” he complained.
Finally, on his last shot of the morning, with daylight arriving, Woodley signed.
“I live in Waterloo, for the last time this morning. Thankfully,” he said.
But all joking aside, Woodley said he wants viewers to know he takes his job seriously.
“It’s a pretty serious storm, we’re taking it very seriously,” he told Insider. “I want people to know that this isn’t a complete joke to me. I felt like if I brought some personality to it, people would pay attention.”
