Red Bull’s Sergio Perez says he is not worried about the appointment of Daniel Ricciardo as the team’s third driver and says the Aussie will contribute a lot to the team next season.

Sergio Perez has welcomed Daniel Ricciardo back to Red Bull as a third driver, insisting it “changes nothing” despite Sky Sports F1 pundits’ belief he could be a candidate to replace the Mexican.

Ricciardo – after four mixed seasons away from Red Bull, the last of which saw him wound up by McLaren – is back with the Milton Keynes-based world champions for 2023, taking on a role that will see him complete simulator and development work, as well as promotional activity.

The eight-time race winner wants to return to the Formula 1 grid full-time in 2024 and with Perez struggling alongside Max Verstappen in the second half of this season, many have linked Ricciardo with his seat.

Ricciardo and Verstappen were teammates throughout 2016, ’17 and ’18 and have maintained a strong relationship.

But Perez told Sky Sports News earlier this month: “I’m quite relaxed.

Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft believes that there is little that separates Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo as drivers, but does not believe that the Australian is the Red Bulls

“We live under a lot of pressure all the time, it doesn’t change anything from my side. I think it is a great achievement from the team to have a driver like Daniel. He will contribute a lot to our team.”

Perez also emphasized that he was good friends with Ricciardo.

“He’s a great guy, he’s one of the guys I get on with the most in the paddock,” he said. “It’s great to have Daniel in the team and from my side it doesn’t change anything.

“We started our careers at the same time, so we’ve known each other for a long time. I’ll definitely get on with him.”

“The last time Ricciardo drove for Red Bull was in 2018 and F1 cars have changed a lot, it’s like a different category now. I think Max has changed a lot too.

“I think Daniel vs Checo is an interesting battle for ’24 seats… but how do they rate Daniel? They can put him in the sim but it’s not like driving the real car. Then they want to try him in a test et place? That’s what I want to see.”

Relive some of the biggest crashes of this year in Formula 1, including Nicholas Latifi in Australia, Mick Schumacher in Saudi Arabia and Zhou Guanyu in Great Britain.

“I think they are two very different driving styles. They are both capable of winning races, but they win races in very different ways.

“Daniel is a fantastic guy… but he is not the future of Red Bull, mainly because of his age.

“When Max spoke at the end of the season about potentially retiring at the age of 31, it’s a big revelation for me. He’s already thinking about the time he stopped racing. Personally, I would try to consider someone else to come in. if not Checo is the answer.”
