December 22, 1894: SEC schools begin athletic competition against each other as members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Seven campuses (Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Sewanee and Vanderbilt) attended the SIAA conference of college representatives, named Dr. William L. Dudley of Vanderbilt, of Atlanta.

What was Alabama called before Crimson Tide?
1900 Offensive Style In early newspaper accounts of Alabama football, the team was simply listed as “varsity” or “Crimson White” after the school’s colors. Did Alabama have a mascot before the elephant? Still, the elephant was not the first animal to represent the school. A yellow report from the Alabama Library collection dated November 4, 1894 told the story of Sewanee’s success.
