For years, Netflix was notoriously tight-lipped about viewership. But after a few years of declining statistics for some of its programming, Netflix launched a website in mid-November that published charts of the most popular shows and movies from the past week, as well as a global ranking of the most watched titles of all time. .
The lists, which are updated weekly and ranked by the total number of hours subscribers have spent watching them, represent an unprecedented amount of data about what’s popular on Netflix. The website details the most popular titles of the past week, not only globally, but also for more than 90 countries. The company updates its weekly “Top 10 on Netflix” every Tuesday, based on hours watched from Monday to Sunday of the previous week for original and licensed titles. The rankings are divided into top 10 lists for English-language films, English-language television, non-English language films and non-English language television.
A ranking of the most watched titles of all time is also available on the website, detailing shows with the most viewing hours in the first 28 days of release. If a new season releases its episodes in two parts on different dates, Netflix counts the viewing time of the first volume’s episodes for the first 28 days, then it counts the viewing time of the second volume’s episodes for the first 28 days. These times’ ratings are also updated every Tuesday, when some shows enter the charts during the previous week.
