Nearly two dozen companies have expressed interest in an online sports betting license in Massachusetts, confirming suspicions that regulators will get their license plates when they review applications and release them to the industry in March.
Driving news: Regulators have given prospective applicants until October 17 to fill out a “limited survey” to express their interest in the license.
Note: The state’s three casinos and two simulcasting centers have entered their names into individual licenses, as has the Great Meadowbrook Park.
Why it matters: Massachusetts is still months away from going live with sports betting, but with the majority of Internet license applicants (Part 3), it will be difficult for regulators to verify and provide temporary licenses that succeed them – the deadline.
Get in quick: Regulators set a deadline for in-person betting (eg, casinos, simulcastors) at the end of January and online betting at the beginning of March in time for the Super Bowl and the NCAA tournament, respectively.
What they say: “If all 29 actually submit, we may want to discuss how long that will take and our resources,” said Karen Wells, executive director of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, at Thursday’s meeting, per the State House News Service.
Details: Prospective applicants for online licenses range from Boston-based DraftKings to Mohegan Digital and BetMGM to Betr (a startup founded by YouTuber Jake Paul).
