PITTSBURGH — Rodney Hammond played for a revamped Pitt Panthers offense in Game 1 of the season against West Virginia, but it came at a cost. Late in the second half, Hammond injured his leg when a Mountaineer defender tackled him.
Now it looks like the Panthers will be at the back because Hammond isn’t warming up with his teammates before kickoff against the Tennessee Volunteers. Head coach Pat Narduzzi did not provide any updates on Hammond’s status this week.
The good news for Pitt is that they still have two fullbacks with starting experience available. Israel Abanikanda, who led the team a year ago and is listed as a co-starter on this week’s depth chart, is active, as is Vincent Davis, who has 37 career games and over 1,500 yards. on the ground to his credit.
The Panthers will also bring back senior captain and defensive end Deslin Alexandre, who injured his wrist in the first half of the Backyard Brawl. He and reserve linebacker Brandon George were in uniform. George had missed time during camp due to an undisclosed injury.
Freshman defensive end Samuel Okudola and wide receiver Jake McConnachie were the only Panthers without cushions. They also missed the season opener.
