WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Boyd Gaming and FanDuel on Thursday morning, September 8, officially launched the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Kansas Star Casino.

The official ribbon cutting included a ceremonial first bet by Super Bowl champion and former Kansas State Wildcat Jordy Nelson.

Sports betting in Kansas began with a preliminary launch on September 1. Sportsbooks in the state’s four state casinos have begun accepting wagers in person and on mobile platforms such as Barstool Sports, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and PointsBet.

Thursday’s official launch comes with the official start of the NFL season.

The Kansas Star Casino said its sportsbook is a great addition, and is expected to draw fans during the first game of the NFL regular season on Thursday night. Opening the sports book required a lot of work in a short period of time, Boyd Gaming vice president of communications David Strow said.

“Since the legislature passed the legislation, we’ve practically benefited from working triple shifts to get this place ready,” Strow said.

The Kansas Star Casino sports book has 20 self-service kiosks, four wagering windows and a TV wall.

Strow said that Boyd Gaming has worked with FanDuel before, but Kansas is unique.

“I’ve been out helping with a lot of these sports betting openings around the country and I’ve never seen anything like what we have in Kansas and Wichita,” he said.

FanDuel’s vice president of retail operations Jeff Lowich said south central Kansas “is a very sports-hungry part of the county,” especially when it comes to college sports.

“And a lot of Kanas City Chiefs fans, too,” Lowich said.

Since sports betting became legal last week, Lowich said many first-timers have come to the Kansas Star Casino. With the sportsbook open, he expects that to be the case during the NFL and college football seasons.

Strow said the sportsbook is a customer base for the Kansas Star.

“A lot of these customers have never been to the Kansas Star before. They just haven’t had a reason to come here,” he said. “So have the book here, having America’s No. 1 sports betting brand here gives those customers a reason to come here for the first time.”
