Estrella is Rick Barnes’ third commitment from the 2023 class and adds a lot of versatility as a 6’11” forward.

JP Estrella is a 6’11” forward from Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) who dominated the Under Armor circuit this summer with the Middlesex Magic. Estrella, a senior, chose Tennessee over Syracuse, Iowa and Marquette and detailed her thought process behind the decision in a blog for Sports Illustrated.

It’s official—I’m committed to Tennessee.

To me, it really matters a lot; the fit, how Coach (Rick) Barnes showed me how he used me and how hard they chased me and how consistent they were. Coach Barnes talks to me and my family, literally, every day and on that visit it struck me that I really wanted to be there.

I’ve brought an unofficial to Knoxville and then I’m back for an official and, in hindsight, I can definitely say that the official handed it over to me. Going into office, I know I really like Tennessee, but I also really like some of the other schools. After I left I felt like it would be the place for me.

I didn’t want to rush it though. I let him play and make other visits, but I just had the biggest connections in Tennessee.

When I was ready to tell them they had a Zoom call set up the same day. In the end, I told the whole staff that I was coming. The funny thing is Coach Barnes had jumped right before I said it, so I had to FaceTime him. He was very excited.

Their plan was to use me as a big playmaker. They liked my ability to pass from my position and they wanted to see me shoot a ton of balls. In defence, they felt I would be effective in many different ways and ended up keeping 1-5.

JP Estrella is a major addition to the 2023 class for Rick Barnes and Tennessee.

I really like our class. Freddie Dilione is a talented point guard who can get the bucket whenever he wants, and Cade Phillips is perhaps one of the most agile strikers in the country. I think this class will be a special class at the end of the day.

I’ll do what I can to add it too. I actually contacted Freddie the day he committed, so I’m actually going to take a little credit for that one. No, very seriously, I’m definitely going to get in touch with some people to join us in Knoxville.

This is a big summer for me. I pulled over 20 offers, and no doubt this is my time to explode. Tennessee was there before the explosion, and they saw this in me before any other school and it’s something that stuck with me and definitely helped them in the end.

I made a call last week to another school and now I can relax, and I feel very relieved. Now, I can only focus on improving my game to be ready as soon as I arrive on campus next year.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to read this blog and thanks to Sports Illustrated for giving me the opportunity.

Let’s start this new chapter. Go Vol.
