Kenny Golladay’s quiet preseason raised questions about his role with the Giants. Now there is an answer to what contributed to his poor performance.

The wide receiver is recovering from undisclosed surgery in the offseason, general manager Joe Schoen told reporters Thursday. Schoen also confirmed that he still has confidence in Golladay, who is coming off the season opener in New York.

“It’s great,” Schoen said. “He came to work every day. A big boy, he works hard, he knows what he’s doing. I don’t think he’s missed any work. He’s been available, except for the summer – he’s a little organized. But he’s been good.”

Gollay has struggled with several injuries over the past two seasons. In 2020 with the Lions, the 6-foot-4 wideout appeared in just five games because of a hip injury. Last season, he struggled with a groin injury that forced him to miss training camp for a month before suffering a knee injury that forced him to miss three games.

After two injury-plagued seasons, the 28-year-old Golladay said Thursday that he feels “better” entering his second year with the Giants.

“First and foremost, I want to be healthy,” Golladay said. “It’s great that I was able to participate in this training camp in good health, to be able to be a part of any culture to reduce this science.”

Golladay did not participate in OTAs but was available for all of training camp and the preseason. However, he only had one reception on four targets in preseason practice.

While injury concerns are one thing, Golladay’s lack of production on the field is cause for concern. After signing a four-year, $72 million contract before last season, the former Pro Bowler recorded 37 receptions for 521 yards and, for the first time in his career, a touchdown.

Golladay isn’t the only receiver the Giants hope has a bounce-back season. Schoen said Kadarius Toney, who has been dealing with knee and neck injuries, is expected to play in New York’s season opener against the Titans.

“I’m glad to see Kadarius,” Schoen said. “He hasn’t played in the playoffs, so I’m excited to see him get on the field in a meaningful opportunity and know the playbook and make plays.

Like Golladay, Toney struggled with injuries last year. The 2021 first-round pick missed seven games of his season due to injury and was on the reserve/COVID-19 list for part of the year.

Toney finished with 39 receptions for 420 yards and was held scoreless. That made this year even bigger for him.

“I haven’t really set a goal,” Tony said, “but I’m looking forward to doing better than last year, I’d say.”
